| It is usually easy to know there Ani stands from a particular song, but for this one I went back and forth. Was she mocking the "chipper cheerful free-for-all's" or earnestly imploring the angry assholes of the world to be nice? I have finally settled on the interpretation that it is both. Being studiously aloof, an ornery hipster, a paper doll, a cartoon, they are all masks and ways of protecting oneself. It is hard to trust and be genuinely nice, because others frequently do not follow suit. Women are usually the people who end up taking on the giving blood, live-and-let-live role, smoothing it out for the rest of society, and in Ani's career, especially her younger days, as many woman trying to make it do, she took on a more pushy sort of exterior. Here she is saying that the answer to women being exploited is not that women become more aggressive, but perhaps that everyone should be a bit kinder. | |
