@[memb:7966] its good heres mine:

very near perefect in less words than I use but its more generally about how the grass is not always greener teens want to be adults adults want to be teens. The song aint talking about the band but 2 deluded office worker characters the band have portrayed who think by drinking and going to haunts of stars and taking drugs they too can have flash car and model wifes but they die young without even getting the benefits the rock stars had to temper their sadness and youthfull death.

It's obviously a song about not embracing total hedonism... It is the following:

It is about both the office workers in the song think by drinking loads taking drugs and going to posh bars they too can have fancy cars and models for wifes, the lifestyle kills both the stars and the office workers but at least the former had the trappings of wealth such as women, cars, land etc to temper their inner sadness and young death whereas the office workers death is a tragedy because they got so trapped in a life of fantasy that they forget the people who could have made em trully happy and have made up for not having the materialistic things.....there friends and family.

It's not saying don't party hard or have unrealistic dreams but it is saying never forget your friends and family who can help make you retain a grip on where reality starts and fantasy begins so the fantasy doesn't consume you.

The fated to pretend line means that their fantasy took them away from their family and friends and ultimately lead to their death as they had no one to ground there unrealistic expectations that they too could get flash cars and model wifes just by going to the right clubs drinking loads and taking drugs . That said I think the overall message is slightly hedonistic, and that is a good thing, its saying all means party hard but dont aspire to live someone elses life and dont forget the people that trully matter in your life as only being yourself and loving the people in your life will bring you true happiness.

Its not about the band but 2 characters they have made, who happen to be office workers as in one of stanza covers this. And the song touches on how teens want to be adult but adults want to be 18 again. We are all destined to envy someone elses life.

@[RobBay:7963] Nice although my take is very similar

Its about 2 office workers the band are writing about who are imagining these things, and maybe they actually do try and do these things and if so they die young and its a tragedy cause at least the rock stars had the cars and women and private islands to make up for their young death and inner sadness whereas the office workers neglected the things that could have brought em true happines and made their partying safer but still intense; their friends and family

@[shesfashionroadkill:7960] You did misinterpret lol, its more mocking living fast and dying young. but unlike some on here its not totally against the hedonistic life, its a song promoting controlled hedonism and a middle way between just the office job or just being a party animal, a way they can both co exist on top of that its about the grass is always greener syndrome as my explanation below shows:

Its obviously a song about not embracing total hedonism...

@[thepigman:7959] But Its not about folk on the tip of adulthood apart from that you're right. Its about twenty something or possibly thirty-somethings wanting to cling on to youth, its about office workers wanting to have the model girlfriends and killing em selfs trying but unlike the stars they don't get the cars or models to make their inner sadness tapered or there early death a little less tragic. It is about peter pan syndrome but its about folk 20-30s. I upvoted ur comment. Its also about how teens want to be 18 but adults want to be 18 again too.... No one is happy AND 18 YEAR olds probably want more money... which means more years which when they have em they dont want...

@[AluminumAnemone:7958] Because the song is not about the band but 2 characters they have created who are office workers who want to be rich and famous and so imitate the rich and famous. Hes saying the main character will marry the model wife, his mate will party on there own private island and take cocaine and get fast cars. Its a thick as thieves or friendship song about 2 dudes fated to kill themselves trying to live a fantasy that they dont even get to achieve at least for the rock stars they get the material wealth and women to make up for their inner sadness and dying young, the office workers however by having a fantsy miss out what would make em truly happy their friends and family

The song is about controlled hedonims not destuctive hedonims or purer than thou living

@[aeyeth:7952] GOOD this is the point. Although its more saying the grass is always greener on the other side, and its about 2 office workers who go to clubs and party hard like the stars believing they can meet hot model wifes like the stars, there fantasy ultimately kills the office workers and the stars are envious of the office workers 9-5 job, the song touches on how the teens want to be adults but the adults wish they where 18 again etc, its about how fucked up the collective human psyche can be that we always think someone elses life is better than our own. It also posses the question "is there any meaning at all to life or anything after death" however the song both through tone of music and lyrics give no indication that the authors know or have a definitive view on these things one way or another.

@[ChuckBeans:7936] except that aint what they are saying at all lol. They are saying that just going to bars if you have a regular job and taking drugs and loads of drink wont suddenly get you a model wife and that dying youn is sader for the immiators than the rock stars because the latter at least had hot wifes and fast cars to temer their inner sadness and pain of dying young. Short men are not free to mary taller women or get off with em in night clubs if they dance how they like etc, the song is mainly about how the grass is not always greener on the other side and how the rockstars are envious of the 9-5 guys who have a cleaner and simpler and less paperazi life but the average folks wish they had the wealth and fame and women, the teens want to be adults and the adults wish they where 18 again and how all this wanting to be someone else is making every one misreable, it is an ode against pretending too much rather than an ode saying dotn have unrealistic dreams at all, it is saying if you do have such dreams dont forget ur friends and family along the way or else you can lose where reality ends and fantsy begins and thus die etc or become very sad or deluded.

@[TheLonefefe:7928] exactly spot on @[ChuckBeans:7929] except that aint what they are saying at all lol.

@[nutmegpeachpays:7924]

the "having models for wife" is the thing they grow up from or rather is saying they should but not so much grow up from it but temper it by not forgting about family and friends so the office workers realize they are not rock stars after all so nopoint being sador killing em self through drink and drugs! BECAUSE in the song they dont get over there fantasy and it consumes em they die when if they had remebered there family the wouldnt it also mentions how the rock stars are jealous of the office workers cause they want a clean life with responsibilities "il miss my mother and the weight of the world". in the song the teens want to be adults and adults want to be 18 again. its a grass is greener type song. Its about how humans are so fucked up now that no one is just happy with being what they are they want to be someone else!

@[aramchek:7923] Spot on few too people get this nuance view point they focus on the stanza about the rock stars as if mgmt are somehow saying living fast dying young is cool... or the stanza about office work is somehow saying office work is boring and some think the stanza about the rockstars is just criticising their lifestyle... truth is as a collective whole its about how the rock stars want to be in quiter clearner lifes and would envy the office workers yet the office workers want to be living like a rock star and have flash car and model wives, the teens want to be adults and the adults want to be 18 again, it a grass is greener type song slightly more than a damned you do damed you dont song but it is both, after all theyare describing the rock star life as making people miserable but the office life of being dull and unfulfilling it is saying "is there any thing more to life". Lol at the numpties who think they are saying "there is no meaning in life" they are merely asking the question to the universe they get no answer-back nor do they provide one! THe overal method is that the rockstar life is a hair better than the deluded people who think they can get model wifes just by going to the right clubs and living life to excess, at least the former have the money girls and cars to make up for the sadness they feel inside and the early deaths. Whereas the office workers could still have lived hedonistic lifestyles if they had not had unrealistic fantasies and applied even a little self-control and not forgotten about the things that could have brought happiness to them;their family and friends so that they could have told where reality ended and fantasy begun instead being wrapped up in an impossible dream killed em, made em miss out on love and die young but had none of the nice shti the rock stars had when the rock stars die young...

@[Bender86:7922] it means nearly the opposite although the song is far more nuanced than saying don't party, its saying party hard by all means but don't think that will suddenly make you into a rock star or get a model wife or fast car, it wont magically make money appear in your hand by just partying. and can lead to sadness and death if not grounded in a grip of reality provided by family friends. The song however does question the meaning and how real things really are but concludes only our friends ship with our friends and family is real:

This is a simpler song but it is also deep. It's quite clearly not about people who are actual musicians but people who aspire to be them, by going to expensive bars drinking too much and taking drugs etc in the deluded hope they will get the trappings of wealth and fame just by being in the kind of place stars go to.

It is about how stars live immoral lives and end up literally dying young and how the stars wish they could have an office job but the people in the office jobs wish they could be stars. Ultimately no one is happy because they wish they were something else, but perhaps the most unhappy are those in the good office jobs who feel there is something more to life yet are deluding themselves about where they will find true happiness, not at the bottom of a bottle or in a happy pill but in their families and friends, and they end up dying trying to find a star to date when it's all just a fantasy because just cause they can afford to go to the posh clubs doesn't mean they will ever actually get to fuck with the stars. At least the rich musicians and actors whilst being miserable are actually having sex with hot women and have fancy cars, at least their miserableness is tapered a bit by having the trappings of wealth. The guy who said that folk are lost these days between 18-30 is right, in fact this song is about how folk in their early thirties or mid thirties are more and more playing the same game of pretending they can be rich famous and that everyone feels they are young forever its saying its both a good and bad thing, I think it saying not to forget your true friends and family, by all means party and have fun and try to look young for as long as you can by any means but don't forget about what really makes you happy. It is both spiritual and nihilistic at the same time, quite an awesome song full of moral liberalism and conservatism in the one song.

Jus brill, I like how it is basically saying there is a place for both way of looking at things and more than anything I love the idea about songs that cover both the grass is not always greener on the other side and songs that reflect that things where more marvellous when you where a child.

When you were a teen you wanted to be an adult, when you're an adult you want to be a teen. When you're a star you want a normal quiet life and to be in an office, and in office you want to get wrecked and have lots of hot sex like the stars do. Humanity is fucked up lol.

@[deathbylove:7920] glad you get so many think this is either totally supportive or totally against the rock star life style as I try to get thru to the simplistic people it is neither, but is however a song about teens wishing they were adults and adults wishing they where 18 the protagonists who are office workers die trying to copy thhe rock stars and long for the fast cars and fame and the model wifes yet the rock stars who wish they could be in a simpler cleaner life and are maybe even jealous of the office workers "I miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world" weight of the world referring to the responsibilities of a normal 9-5 job and having a family of your own.

@[real_toothpaste:7918] its the reverse of what your saying dude, the part they where playing was rock stars when the 2 office workers he describes in this song werent and no amount of booze and drink would magically get them fast cars or women, it brough only sadness and death and unlike the stars they never at least got the materilaist pleasures or hot wifes that would have at least mitigated the pain.

@[Rider:7912] nearly totally right but the bit about missing the simpler life is about how the rock star folks wish they had the office worker life where as the office worker in this song by partying and going to thhe haunts stars go ends of dying the same death but their death is even moe tragic than the stars because unlike the stars they never had the women and the fast cars to make up for the sadness they felt and young death. Also the bit about longing for youth contrasts with the first stanza, the first stanza could be about a teen wanting that lifestyle when they grow up, the last bit is sort of about adults wanting to be 18 again even though it is talking about being a young child! Peter pan complex is a theme of this song, but its not a song saying we should party hard etc or that we should, its saying if we are an office worker dont have unrealistic fantasies that get in the way of seeing what is trully important in life by all means have unrealstic fantasies but dont let em get in the way of your happiness or true friends you help you distinguish where reality ends and fantasy begins.

@[ILikeMusic17:7911] firstly i upvoted cause the last line is sort off what the song is abouut. However it is not about the band imaging life would be like if they lived like rock stars, it is in fact a story about 2 office workers aspiring to be like the stars and yet the stars aspire to be like office workers hence the lines like "I miss my sister my father my dog and my home" and "Ill miss my mother and the weight of the world" its about how no matter what we have we will always want soomething else
early teens wish they where adults, adults wish they where 18 again, office workers drink em self to death trying to get model wifes like the stars and living like the stars even though that is deluded, and stars drink em selfs to death whilst wishing they where office workers but at least the stars had the trappings of wealth and fame to make up for the sadness so out of all those classes of people the office workers had it worse, they had a fantasy that could not be realized and caused em to lsoe sight of the important things, their family and their friends which could have meant they where more grouned when they partied hard and where happier human beings.

. You didnt get it spot on but its about half right what you say. The song is about how rok stars wanna work in an office out the limelight but the 2 protags in the song, office workers, drink em self to death just like rock stars do but its worse because their dream is delusional they cant get the model wifes or fancy cars just by going to the same bars and living the same excesses . The song is saying the model wifes make up for the rockstars dying young as they had fun in life but the death of the office workers is a tragedy as they never got any of the comforts the rock stars had instead their fantasy prevented them from enjoying the things that would make up for them not having the model wifes or the fancy cars; there family and friends. It's about how teens want to be adults and adults wish they were 18 again. All this wanting to be someone else is fucking us over, just enjoy the moment!

@[MrFraud:7910] Lol at people like you taking nearly the total opposite meaning that the song is intended to mean, Its about how if you let go of your family and friends you become sad and trying to copy the stars isnt actually going to get you a model wife or

Its fine for the stars to die young and have the sadness of being unhappy with their lot because they at least had lots of hot sex with model wifes and fancy cars to make up for their sadness but its a tragedy that the

Its not a song saying dont party hard, its one saying dont delude yourself into thinking that will bring you fame and fortune, or even love, and dont forget the things that can keep you grounded in reality and make you actually happy; your friends and family. The death was tragic for the office workers who died trying to be like the stars "we were fated to pretend" there fantas and lack of family to at least keep em sane ultimately led to their demise, sans the model wifes to make up for it...

the song also covers the following:

Its about at the very earliest 20 year olds and probably more than likely about folk in their mid twenties all the way thru to their mid thrities trying to hold onto their youth. Its about teens aspiring to be adults and adults wishing they where 18 again and office workers deluding em selfs into thinking they can be like the stars if they just go to the right places, take drugs and party too hard but the stars are also envying the office workers "I miss my mother and the weight of the world" the weight of the world being a normal job and pressures.

But ultimately whilst both the stars and the ones who wish they where stars die young, the imitators dying young is tragic cause they never did get the material possessions or hot wife to mitigate the sadness they felt unlike the stars who may have died young and been very sad but their material things at least meant they did have some serious fun, sometimes.

Its about stop tryng to be something else or wishing you had a different life as such things will make you sad.

@[jenn123:7907] You and the guy below are right some folk are misinterpreting it and not seeing the sarcasm and criticism inherent in the song but its not as simple as saying stop partying its more nuanced than that. Its saying by all means try to keep your looks via plastic surgery etc as long as you can, take pills to keep you young, drink shit loads but never drink that one shot too many, don't forget the things that keep you grounded in reality; your family and friends because trying to live a fantasy lifestyle kills you:

the start paragraph and end is correct but you miss the point of the song, its a grass is always greener song, the song describes 2 office workers who could be 21 or could be 35 and on their last throws of youth (mgmt leave this up to the listener to suit their own personal age, I prefer to think of em as 24-28) who think by going where the stars go and partying hard they too can get the model wifes etc but they cant:
