I'm a hopeless romantic. Sorry. :p I don't really like to interpret song meanings, because sometimes another person's interpretation totally ruins the entire song for me. It puts thoughts in my head that weren't there before. It can be fun, though. :)

Say that this is a love song, about bad timing...

They don't "belong" together, although they do (different class, family feud or she has another or maybe he was too shy to do something about it before it was too late)... And if she too saw that they were perfect for each other, then they could write the saddest song. The saddest song being life: they would be the best of the sad human lives on earth (as another said, human condition).

Regardless of her being unattainable, he pines for her and imagines them being together (the cell he's in is his imagination, fantasy) where he stays until he's face-to-face with reality once again and realize he doesn't have her (his saddest song).

As he looks back on his past, he wish he could do it all over again. Getting her would be the biggest accomplishment he could ever make, and compared to that humongous loss, his other accomplishments aren't as big as he'd like. Maybe there's a lot of other things he would have loved to do, but was too scared to?

** It could also be true love, but the timing just SUCKED **

So he takes a leap. He goes back to his love and confess, pours his heart out.
Maybe she feels the same about him, maybe not. No matter what, he will still love her and think about her, and 'follow her in his heart'

Now, this could also be about his true love but that he lost her (death), where he takes a literal leap off a precipice to reunite with her in death "no matter the cause, whether it works out or not, I'll follow you with my heart" (where "whether it works out or not" implies heaven and hell).

But the latter is just heartbreaking, so I like the first best.
