The XX – Fiction Lyrics 8 years ago
This is about a relationship where one person hopes it could be more than it is.

Fiction, when we're not together
Mistaken for a vision, something of my own creation

- I make up a fictitious version of our lives when we're not together. I think it's something that could happen, but it's my hope, not reality

I wake up alone, with only daylight between us
Last night the world was beneath us, tonight comes, dear love

- we're not together and nothing is stopping us from being together. Nothing mattered to us when we were together/hooked up, but now the end is coming

Were we torn apart by the break of day?
You're more than I can believe, would ever come my way

- was it always going to be like this? Is this my realisation that is never being together was inevitable? Are we too different? You're better than I thought I deserved

Fiction, when we're not together
Mistaken for a vision, something of my own creation
- I have been lying to myself

Come real love, why do I refuse you?
'Cause if my fear's right, I risk to lose you
- and I'm missing out on real love with someone else, which is what I want. I fear that this isn't real love. But if I admit that, then I lose this illusion that I've created of us being in love

And if I just might wake up alone
Bring on the night
- and if I'm just by myself, then bring on the sadness/despair, or time when I can dream more about this fictitious version of us

Fiction, when we're not together
Mistaken for a vision, something of my own creation
- I dream of a fictitious version of us

Any certainties, how am I to tell?
I know your face all too well, still I wake up alone
- I don't know anything for certain. I feel so close to you, yet I'm not.

Fiction, when we're not together
- so I make up these lies to help me cope.

The Chainsmokers – Something Just Like This Lyrics 8 years ago
So he's been analysing everything he can, to try and find an answer. An answer to what he wants. A formula to love.

All of these stories are about heroes. They've got something that makes them different.

That's why he admires them. But he's got unrealistic expectations about himself.

He's not different; he's got nothing in comparison to these heroes. No gold, no gifts, control, or fists.

They're heroes that he admires, and he knows he doesn't have these traits which he deems to be heroic.

He thinks he doesn't deserve to be a hero.

He doesn't deserve to get what he wants. He doesn't have anything to offer.

He can't be someone's hero.

Yet her expectations of a hero are different.

She wants to understand him, wants to know where he wants to go with his life. She thinks she wants to go on that same journey with him.

And her expectations fit what he can give her. Someone she can turn to. Who gets her. Someone she can kiss.

Someone who would feel like a hero if he was with her.

She wants something just like this. Something like what he can offer.

She's almost afraid to admit it, because she's worried he doesn't want it. She's not sure if he will feel like the hero he wants to be if he's with her.

At the end of the song, it's him saying that he wants something just like this. Someone to want what he can offer. He wants to be someone's hero.

They want each other. They could work.

The beauty to the song is this: are they in a position to get what they want?

Or will they be too afraid about getting what they want that they are forever hoping. For something just like this.

Incredible.

The Gaslight Anthem – Biloxi Parish Lyrics 9 years ago
Try it on for size, my darling, try out a relationship with me. I'm only fumbling with your heartstrings at the moment but I'll either be someone who will eventually haunt you forever, for what we might have been, or you will be my queen.

Next he is with her, telling her nothing really matters that you cannot find for free, a lover and a partner. And I have found you. And when you leave this world, I want to follow you wherever that goes. I will be with you through the dark, the worst times, so you never have to deal with it alone again.

Maybe the dark is a rough time she is going through, or it's nearly the end of her life. And who else can say that about you. I love you more than anyone and more than I can tell you.

Even my heroes burned out and went out of this world alone. As though she is better than all of his heroes. He won't let her go alone. She is his biggest hero.

Amazing lyrics.

The Gaslight Anthem – The Navesink Banks Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is about him looking back on his life and thinking about all of his sins, the things that shaped him as a person, and viewing them with a sad nostalgia. As though he regrets them.

He's near the place he was born, taking his wife/partner around and telling her about all of his mistakes, his sins. The worst things about himself. Oh Maria if you'd have known me when... you wouldn't be with me.

The way she just smiles as though it is nothing. She has accepted him for who he is, and knows he had to go through all that to be where he is. With her. And then she just says that your first sin was a lie you told yourself, as though it wasn't even a sin. Just beautiful.

Just imagine telling someone the worst things about you and they tell you that they are not even bad. They are not sins. Just wow.

@[Desaparecida:16226] I definitely think it's two different women. He doesn't call the first one by name, just a young American girl. She was the sin, and she is someone who made him who he is, even though he isn't particularly proud of it. Maria is the one who has accepted him as who he is, and has stepped into his river - his life - while he is on the banks, stuck in this past for a few moments. Seeing everything properly under the light from the moon. The nighttime reference is a reference to his age and maturity.

Love your analysis.

@[cieran:16225] it's not just about what is in the past is in the past: it's his past that brought him to where he is now. Your first sin is a lie you told yourself means it wasn't even a sin. Is was you that thought it was a sin, but she doesn't see it as that.

Really enjoyed your analysis.

@[Infil:16224] the man is just a generic term. It means it could be anyone and it happens everywhere. There's something beautiful about the anonymity

Rihanna – Birthday Cake Lyrics 9 years ago
These lyrics are so deep. She is making a statement about her personality, her sexuality and her birthday. Yes. That is obvious.

But the hints towards the sheer futility of life yet the beauty in it, religion, poverty and the desire of fame yet the lack of a genuine meaningful life is just superb.

Well done, Rihanna. You have done our generation proud.

Ron Pope – A Drop In The Ocean Lyrics 9 years ago
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It's about almost having the girl you want, or having the girl you almost want. You're in love but you know there's something that will stop it from being there forever. You have made these choices, and now you wonder if you made the right one: wishing for the rain as you stand in the desert.

Heaven doesn't seem that far away... but it actually is. So bittersweet.

It can also mean that you have the girl you want but she doesn't want you in the same way. Argh, it's just so sad.

The Gaslight Anthem – Mae Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the song starts in the past, and then gets to the present. He finds a girl who is amazing - don't ever change - but they somehow move apart.

He's seeing her again, and he sees her again. Neither have been in love for a while, both are single.

He's been to the same place with other girls but he's not been able to find what they had.

He's longing for something that they've both lost - their youth, but they both shared together for a while.

The Gaslight Anthem – She Loves You Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a love song, but I don't think there are two women. It's him, and he believes he has found his true love (for better/for worse), but Juliet is smoking, not looking out for him our calling for him. She just believes in him/believes in his love. But she doesn't feel the same.

She has never belonged to him. He feels he is Romeo, the most romantic story in the world, but she just doesnt think he's the right one.

The Gaslight Anthem – Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts Lyrics 10 years ago
@[lrb85:7807] I tlike to think the words go:

Some things babe, they never told you
Some things papa doesn't like
Spend a lifetime just to get over her
You always said my mama tried

As in there is is something deeper than your parents' relationship (papa, mama) that you'll never know, but you actually do find that out when you go through that yourself - almost as though you are between it yourself, and you realise everything yourself. You realise they are just people too. Spend a lifetime just to get over her.

Great references to some other great lyricists, which is the core part of their sound and their feel. So nostalgic, but at the same time, it's generalised enough that you feel as though it's something you are actually missing.

Beautiful lyrics.
