I think this song is about a non-formal relationship, a kind of open relationship, in which the girl was getting involved too much and therefore begins to demand more attention and real love from her partner. But the guy knows that she wants to get only the advantages of a engagement, and she doesn't want to abandon the benefits of her "single" status. Even though she pretends to be in love, actually she lies to him and even (I suppose because of the tone of reproach in the first strophe) is cheating on him with one or more guys. Moreover, she assumes her partner isn't clever enough to realize about this double-life she is carrying, but in fact he does know and only stands in a sort of "cat and mouse" game to see how far she reaches. This is implied in the first two strophes, as well as her custom to run away from problems or engagement ("Back under the rock you came from and hide away"). "I know everything you're doin baby and I know every game you're runnin You must think that I am blind Cause it's right before my eyes So don't get it twisted baby Don't say that I got it wrong Cause there's just no way out for you this time And don't say that our love is strong Cause we both know you want to crawl Back under the rock you came from And hide away..." Later, the guy emphasizes his ego meanwhile despises her by saying: "I'm telling you got it twisted baby Cause you're not the one who I'll be missin I'm not broken up this time Got another one in mind So don't get it twisted baby" It's like: "You are wrong if you think that I will suffer for you and your lies, I'm stronger than you believe and even I'm already thinking in someone else to fool around with, so let your self-confidence and don't misunderstand this thing we have". Though, for the tone in which he expresses, it's clear he is in love with her, only he can't accept it because of the treacherous behavior of the girl. In the last paragraphs, he continues with the avoidant- personality issue and also he refuses her very probably when she tries to seduce him, and he dare to say that he'll never yield to her, no matter what she does. He guarantees her that he will forget about her and, eventually, she will run away like always. So he gives the last word and say goodbye to her forever. "See I'm not just gonna sit and take this lady And I'm not gonna let you play me So don't even try and fight Cause you're gonna only lose tonight So don't get it twisted baby It won't be too long Till you're wonderin' How you got yourself left behind It won't be too long Till I'm watching you crawl Back under the rock you came from To hide away You know it's time for me to rearrange What was between you and I So don't think that you can just Play your lies away I've thrown your love away" |
