Lucinda Williams – Righteously Lyrics 5 years ago
Anna Ash does a great version of this special tune... I love this song despite what she is on about. Were she my friend I would treat her better.... no pain... John Coltrane... well done Lucinda!

The Hawklords – 25 Years Lyrics 5 years ago
No comments? Let me be the first then.
This was one of the better eras of the Hawk family of bands and I was lucky enough to get to see them in action in 78 at no less a venue than Bletchley Leisure Centre. It was packed of course... I consider this one of my fave gigs ever being able to see Mr Calvert cavorting for our pleasure all the way through the album to the inevitable Silver Machine encore with spinning silver bicycle wheels (I think, one of Bob's little jokes there).
Perhaps to non-UK readers/listeners some bits of lyric are unfamiliar. GCEs are what you did at 16 before leaving to work... when you got there you might be lucky to get a day off a week to attend your local college to study for a professional qualification, "City and Guilds". I don't know if this is still available but I did ONC and HNC but that is another story.
But quite what a "Sky Diary" is I have no clue... great song though.

Blue Öyster Cult – Flaming Telepaths Lyrics 5 years ago
Absolutely adore this song whatever darker meanings it likely has.
Opening your veins... yes, could be drugs or vampires or suicide....
The niggle with me though is something I have not read here - the title "Flaming Telepaths".... yes, there could be an allusion to Firestarter... am reminded of the Hawklords song Psi Power about it being like a "radio you can't switch off" and how it might drive you to extremes.
Incidentally might be worth checking out the super-sinuous version of FT by Espers.

Christopher Cross – Best That You Can Do (Arthur's Theme) Lyrics 5 years ago
Love is a fickle thing at the best of times... and the worst of times... but worst of all is its timing as poor old Arthur has to contend with. I grew up laughing at Pete and Dud so when I was sat in our local fleapit I truly did not know what the heck I was watching... where was the plastic mac and cap?
I have personal affiliation with this song which still evokes a memory of a special someone from a long time ago. If she ever reads this... unlikely I know... she and the song remain special... thanks.

Steely Dan – Kings Lyrics 5 years ago
Don't get me wrong I do like this song but for some reason I have always had a problem with these lines...
Roll out the bones and raise up your pitcher
Raise up your glass to Good King John
It is the "raising up" that gets me... it is a bit like "underground tunnels"... or "drop down".... superfluous wordage ok in conversation but not to read or in a song...
Sorry if my mentioning this affects your aural pleasure from now on, my wife says to me I wish you had not told me that as now I cannot unhear it...

Rod Stewart – Reason To Believe Lyrics 5 years ago
This is a memorable song with a curious history for the evolution of British pop music and my life.
We all enjoyed Top of the Pops back then weird for me to see my current fave Radio 1 DJ John Peel bashfully performing or rather miming on the show when Rod and co came on doing Maggie May what had become the A-side of the single. This was naughty of them but since Peel was an avid supporter of The Faces how could he refuse. He had been responsible for my liking of that band too among many others of course.
But it is the lyrics of this song and what had originally been the A-side "Reason to Believe" that were to become curiously prophetic on a personal level notably:
"Knowing that you lied straight-faced while I cried"
A relationship serenaded by this song as a track on one of her fave cassettes and especially:
" Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else..." etc
Well so much for that....
I still love this song and it triggers mostly happy memories but we all have to move on. Sadly Rod's latter day antics seldom match up to the formative years and songs like this echo down the year with that sweet achey sadness not least for the loss of its originator Tim Hardin.

this song was the last ‘new song’ with Becker on vocals…

Smokie – Living Next Door To Alice Lyrics 5 years ago
Lots of memories of daze and nights with this song playing... mostly good even though this song appears at first glance to be about unrequited love from the viewpoint of a shy man (or woman?). Somethings are a bit odd here though.
24 years? So how old are these people now? 30 plus?
Limo on the drive? Not in the street, hearses likely don't park on your drive so that one is out. A cop car then which goes with "head held high" maybe?
Carved our names on the bark, naughty naughty disfiguring nature but we used to and it was usually initials... FJ L SR for example for all the world to see forever. Like tattoos not a good idea after you have fallen out or in this context left town...
It is a sad thing that some of us for our own private reasons either cannot or will not declare our feelings for another but what a shame women's intuition did not see this guy's interest in time. Maybe she went off with another man before he could make his move... procrastination is the worst vice!

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 5 years ago
Special place in anyone's life if they like good music, the band's best known song but by no means the only song they should be remembered for. On the cusp of a new decade as punk made way for something more subtle and introspective perhaps, JD were setting out a stall that influenced so many others to come. And from its ashes came another superb outfit with their slant on the evolution of the eighties, New Order.
As to what the song is about I think others have spotted that this is about the torment that can sometimes afflict one or both participants in an emotional relationship. Perhaps most relevant to a couple who were once close (the LP is called Closer) but cracks are appearing. Like quicksand the more you struggle the deeper you sink or in this context the further "apart" you become. Instead of the original parallel, hand-in-hand, pathway it is now diverging, her back is turned while he can't sleep beset by doubts and recrimination perhaps. "Again" he says, they have had troubled times before and despite making an effort here we are again... that old feeling of losing the grip, losing the love that used to bind you together now is frustrating to the point where you are both tearing it apart. That is the key word, once one now he faces a life without her, being apart having a kind of double meaning I think. The relationship is a casualty of other troubles that keep coming back into their lives. In his case likely it was the mental illness that led him to sadly take his own life... it is both a love song about how deep you can care for another as well as memorial.
Having been in a similar situation where it was all running on empty I feel relieved that our relationship did not get this bad. But it took the arrival of another to finally end the torment. But I still play this song now and again and it gives me a boost; within the torment there is also a passion that Mr Curtis brought to his music so ably assisted by his band mates. Better to feel at this intensity than to be dead inside.

Pussycat – Mississippi Lyrics 5 years ago
A lovely pop song likely written by someone who misses the Mississippi not least the country music. The group were Dutch I believe so maybe they toured there and want to return.
Personally I like the melancholic feel it has for something lost that was precious. It happened to me once many years ago whilst sat on the stairs talking to my girlfriend and it came on the radio... that feeling of loss suddenly came over me... what I/we once had was now over...

Steely Dan – Reelin' In The Years Lyrics 5 years ago
@[SRV:35062] Blues Wow, all these years and you have shone a fresh new light on this toon... it amuses me how SD can create such a jolly, dance-tune with such heartbreaking lyrics. All those chumps tripping the light fantastic oblivious that the gal they are dancing with might just be like our gal in the song... me included. I played her their records countless times but she only saw the happy pop. Maybe that guy they sing about truly did turn out to be "the one".... our poor guy just had to face up to those "years" being gone and find someone who appreciates his view of life. Twinges of jealousy there perhaps?

Steely Dan – Green Earrings Lyrics 5 years ago
Love this song; it has plenty of memories since I first heard it on RS. Playing it in my Mini to my girlfriend led me to buy her some but I never stole from her like this song. But she stole something from me...
Poignant and yet murky as usual with BnF, someone coveting I presume his GF's jewelry to pawn. He must be desperate so he takes them knowing their worth. Maybe he gave them to her as a present? He wants them back maybe because they split up... maybe he has also taken some other things from her like a medallion (or is that another Dan euphemism?) but the "look in your eyes" likely means she knows what he is up to... what price a relationship eh folks?

Steely Dan – Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More Lyrics 5 years ago
Lots of great memories associated with this song and playing that album 75-78.
Particularly the feel of this song but it is daunting that all these years later reading what others think it is about that my nice memories of super summers humming or even singing along with this toon actually was a grim tale of a failed, faded hustler in a city a million miles from me. Something about SD and their ability to weave vignettes of depravity and dissolution while embedding it in some very fine music and intricate musicianship.

Blue Öyster Cult – This Ain't The Summer Of Love Lyrics 5 years ago
I bought the album and this sets the tone for what is to come.... "Summer of Love" was that hippy dream time in the mid sixties, a decade had passed and here we had those arch metalloid fiends BOC putting the 70s into perspective. No, "things aint what they used to be" so maybe we should all get real and grow up and deal with the harsher realities of life that were always there...
It segues into another paean to times lost and times to deal with stuff you rather you did not have to..."True Confessions" an allusion to the magazines of this name no doubt.
A great track from a great album I played all the time that year... my girlfriend once remarked to the contrary when it had finished playing, our relationship endured at least another year but then it was soon enough time for some true confessions, no 78 "aint the summer of love".... well, for some of us maybe...

Beach House – Myth Lyrics 6 years ago
Sublime song in all respects. A nice memory trigger for softer feelings that conveys troubled romance I think.
"Myth" is a curious word in the love song context. Not heard that one much. The word means to me "false" or misunderstood" history. Like "myths" and legends... not factual, tho not entirely devoid of elements of truth but down thro the years get misrecalled etc. Great stories for cold wintry nights etc.
In this song I think it means that one person has been living in a dream. That often happens, I have been there too at least twice. But it can lead you into danger when the "myth" - that image projected on the partner, gets more and more out of synch with the realities that longer relationships sooner or later get mired in...

The Waterboys – We Will Not Be Lovers Lyrics 6 years ago
"How your eyes are like tortures"
Wonder if this should not read:
"How your eyes are like torches"?
Surprised that this engaging toon has not garnered more comments so insightful it is. How we all struggle with feelings; unrequited love among the best subjects for songs (and poems etc) and this being one of the most achingly earnest.
Yet his insistence is a contradiction. His passion will get the better of him so strong is the reaction she inspires in him. Oh to be able to experience such intensities at least once in life.
But it is the eternal conundrum, to be so drawn to a fellow human and at the same time be so frustrated. It reaffirms just how limited is our understanding of the mechanisms of attraction. I suspect this is a paen or plea to reassure someone in the writer's life... but where did he put all that emotion?

Porcupine Tree – Arriving Somewhere But Not Here Lyrics 10 years ago
Is this about the death of Diana? The car crash, the dreams unfilled... sons?
Otherwise an intriguing message from the master.
Also wonder how it is set in the context of the Deadwing album.
