I see this as a song addressing the importance and meaning of life, itself. For example, Bowie gives examples of how life can seem worthless or "not worth it." He then says, in the chorus, "it's the freakiest show," addressing that life can have bizarre twists and turns, but then mentions, "I wonder if he'll ever know, he's in the best selling show," indicating that although life is a rollercoaster, it is still a wonderful "show" overall. Not to mention, he says, "is there life on Mars?" a rhetorical question that proves that life is precious, because we're the only planet (that we know of) that has it.
This is my own personal guess, and I'm not sure if it's true, but this is what the song means to me. |
