Pearl Jam – Off He Goes Lyrics 9 years ago
Its about growing a part from someone close to you. You see each other again and as the lyrics say, you laugh and smile like you always did. This isn't totally a sad song. His "preconceptions" tell him that things are different and that they shouldn't be able to connect like before. But he's wrong and they do. The friend is still strong and still smiles. The only thing that has changed is the surrounding bullshit, i.e. all the meaningless worries and anxieties of life. The narrator of this tale feels bad in the end because of the fact that he felt the need to think things had changed.

TL;DR - The only thing that keeps people from reconnecting with old friends is "preconceptions" and assuming that things have changed. Ultimately, we don't change too much.

Pearl Jam – Daughter Lyrics 10 years ago
I have to chuckle when I think of this song now. I've listened to it for years and only until recently, after a closer listen and possibly some internet digging, I realized the profound statement of this song. I always listened to this song and thought of it as this goofy catchy song in which Eddie for some reason can't stop being called a daughter. I appreciated it as a nice break from the deeper emotional songs like Black or Nothingman. However, I'm glad I listened more closely and love how he can articulate such a emotional message through what seems to be a more light hearted song.

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 10 years ago
I honestly do not connect to this song because of its explicit content, which is obviously the hurt of a breakup/love lost, I did at one point years ago but I'm far over that... But the reason this song is so good is because of its sheer honest emotion that Eddie articulates better than any other artist I've encountered. I've listened to this song more than any other but still get chills and have teared up many times... His emotion is so real.
