| Cheap Trick – Surrender Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| @[Levster:34307] Yeah! I love that bit about "surrender" and "don't give yourself away". Surrender to the fact that you'll grow up someday, but don't let that jade you. Don't forget the joys and dreams of youth. That's more or less the meaning I always got from this, but you spelled it out very nicely! | |

For me this one's a love song. I didn't even think that it was about fucking but I guess that's implied since they're going to spend time together at her empty house. IDK, just the bit about "I'll be right there", sounds like she needs him and he's coming to save her. But it's kind of mundane overall. Let's get 40s, not go to that party, just hang out, at 12:51 at night. In a way that's kind of what love is... Glamorous yet totally mundane at the same time. |

Pretty sure @[ntwjones:33112] was responding to a commenter who said "hahaha how does anyone know what 40s are?", not to Julian Casablancas himself, lol. Also agree with my mate ntwjones that it's a bit melancholic. But it's still a love song. |

| Oasis – Some Might Say Lyrics | 6 years ago |

@[sgtpotter:33089] Yeah that sounds about right. It's not the first time I heard that Noel didn't really even know what he was writing about. That's kind of the genius of him, though. He could write something epic that stirred emotion in you without even really knowing why. Just the words he chose, coupled with the music... it's poetry, man. Rock and roll poetry. A lesser writer would do the same thing and it'd be nonsense. But not Noel. It's also cool because it kind of leaves things open to interpretation. I take the song as meaning, people talk, people are opinionated, people are always gonna butt into your life and tell you how you should think, act, etc. And the whole song is basically like, a reminder and a fuck you to those people. "Well, you know what some might say".... "and it don't fucking matter, mate". |

| Screeching Weasel – My Brain Hurts Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
I think this is a song about individuality... SO many different opinions out there, so much confusion inside, yet everyone else seems so fucking certain! "I wonder what the hell is wrong with me?" Also judging the "sheeple".. "these people look like maggots". "She's straight out of a magazine, breathing different air than me" We've been fed so much shit from the society, our parents, etc. Just because they said it's this way doesn't mean it is. Thus, "I gotta figure it out, cus I don't want something to believe in!" I don't want to BELIEVE in anything. I want to KNOW. But the journey from ignorance to knowing is not easy. It's a fucking mindfuck. That's why, my brain hurts!!! There's so much fucking shit to process. But here we are doing it anyway, because the other way, taking shit at face value, sucks. |

| The Presidents of the United States of America – Video Killed the Radio Star (The Buggles cover) Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
Commenting on this one (and NOT the Buggles' original) because, as a kid born in '91, this is the version that means something to me. And TBH, I like it better. :) I don't remember where I first heard it, but it was definitely when I was young. Maybe it was in The Wedding Singer? But, no matter where it was, it has always meant something to me. I was never really able to put my finger on it until today. So we all know what this is about on the surface. New technology came and killed the old. Well, I was just thinking today... we're all sort of the "radio stars" in our own lives. What ever happened to that 12 year old kid who use to rock out to this song on his iPod mini? "If I was young, it didn't stop you comin' through!" Well, that 12 year old kid has been "killed" by the new 27 year old me. The old me is no more. The "radio star" is gone. So this song isn't just about the advance of technology... it's about the inevitable march forward of TIME. This song, for me, brings up nostalgia, and maybe sadness for the loss of an innocence that once was. But at the same time, it's delivered in such a way that makes you wanna say... damn, it's been a wild ride. And it still IS a wild ride. Let's keep the march going. Let's mourn the past and cherish it for what it was... but let's keep this thing moving forward. It captures all those emotions and feeling for me. Perhaps that's why the song is so timeless. |

| Screeching Weasel – Hey Suburbia Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
@[skatepunkzero:27862] Yeah that sounds accurate. To me the "we're in love with you" is clearly sarcastic. Growing up in the suburbs sucks. And growing up we're hammered with that message of going to college, getting a job, staying on the straight and narrow and doing all the same crap just to end up with the same comfortable suburban life. Thus the message of "we don't care", "we don't give a shit about tomorrow", and "SHUT UP" over and over. Lol! Definitely some youthful rebellion to this one. An anthem as another poster said. |

| Cheap Trick – Surrender Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
A lot of explanation on here, I think the simple meaning of the song gets lost in all that over-analysis... I always sort of had an idea of what this song meant but today as a 26 year old it finally clicked for me. The important part of the song isn't the kid's perspective... it's the parents'. "Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away" means: surrender to the course of life. Growing up, old age, kids, job, routine... Surrender. But. Don't give yourself away either. Don't change what you're about. Don't change who you are deep down. Don't lose that spark. Just like the parents in this song. I'm starting to think about settling down and having kids, etc. It's kind of scary and I'm not always sure if I'm making the right decision. But in that headspace today, listening to this song, it finally clicked. This is, IMO, the literal meaning of the song. But really it could be about anything. "Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values". - the Dalai Lama. |
|
| Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
It's a very deep song IMO. There's literal imagery but I believe it goes deeper than that. The following is how I interpret it: You could think about a relationship. Someone who has a partner and is feeling loved and top of the world. You could think about being popular and well-liked, as another poster mentioned. You could think about someone who has a really good job. You could think of any good circumstance, really. And then the disaster - "I discovered that my castles stand upon pillars of sand". How many of us are guilty of thinking that we have it all figured out, only to be humbled and brought to our knees by life? "Never an honest word, but that was when I ruled the world". Because when we act like we have it all figured out, when we are so attached to our circumstances (relationship, job, whatever), we are being fake. We are hiding from the fact that we are transient beings, so fragile that any number of circumstances could put an end to it all. We are afraid to show our weakness, our fragility, our humanity... When we admit that, we are not the rulers of this world, that we are just here for a blink of an eye, that we are not necessarily in control - that is where honesty begins. Lots of death imagery here. When we are in touch with our fragility, our weakness, our humanity, alas, with our mortality - that is when we are most in touch with this mystery called life. Viva la vida. |

| Screeching Weasel – Every Night Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
Reading the lyrics now it sounds like it could be about a break up or something like that ("scratching apologies to you too late too little") that happened as a result of the singer's poor behavior / decisions. That's probably why he's "not feeling human anymore" and "half-connected all the time". But I always looked at it another way. It was crippling in high school but I still experience some of it to this day - and that is, I was always really hard on myself. Like, oh my god, I can't believe I said that. That was so stupid. Or I can't believe I acted so lame in gym class. That girl could definitely tell I'm a loser. Etc. etc. That kind of thing. And maybe it's a bit different nowadays but I still tend to second guess every thing I do and say. Every night. The song is somber yet at the same time it's caressing, loving. I get subtle joyous vibes from this beneath the sadness. It's like, despite the fact I second guess everything I do, despite the fact that I fuck up every day (whether real, or as in my case, imagined) I am a human being. And beautiful just like this song. Love it. |

| Anna Kendrick – Cups Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
It's like the singer wants her boyfriend / lover to go with her on a journey, but he doesn't want to. Despite that, she's going anyway. And she knows that he will miss her. It's like the lover doesn't recognize her value, but she does - that's why she knows he will miss her. And that's also why she's leaving - because she deserves something more. It really is, to me, a song of empowerment. It also touches me in times of change. Moving places, jobs, situations... Even leaving this world one day. Trust that in your previous world, home, or life - you will be missed. Because like the singer, you are worthy, you are valuable - you are loved. |

| The Clash – Lost in the Supermarket Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
I think there's definitely the allusions to the emptiness of consumerism, modern society, etc. But I see it as something deeper. It's not just that companies are trying to sell us products, etc. It's about - being lost, in general. And everyone seems to want to sell you something - products, yes, but also their point of view. The church, the politicians, my friends, and even mom and dad. So with so many options, which way do you go? Who I am? What am I here for? What am I about? I'm all lost in the supermarket. And it's a sad song for sure. But by expressing it, by embracing it, there's a beauty to it. I can't speak for how deep Mick Jones meant to go with his metaphor but I can't help but think it was slightly beyond the obvious. |

| Semisonic – Closing Time Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
You know it just keeps happening. I hear these songs a thousand times without really thinking about the meaning, beyond face value, then one day BOOM. It speaks to you at just the right time. "Closing time Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." That's it. It's life. You think you get things figured out, and before you know it, everything gets shaken up. Nothing is forever. Not any one moment, not this life. And it's bittersweet. Sad that the old must be dropped, yet grateful that it happened. Fearful of the new, yet ready to walk it with grace. Maybe not what you expected, but in the end, like this song, beautiful. |

| Dramarama – Until The Next Time Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
What a tune. First heard it in "In The Army Now" as a youngster, always found it super catchy, never really put a meaning to it until just, perhaps, this evening, nigh on 15 years later, hehe. I think the above is correct - could be referencing the guys going on tour, and I think it's definitely referencing drugs. Costs so much, goes so fast, screws you up and drags you down. Pretty clear. That said, I think there's a deeper reading. I think it's about life. Bang! And here we go. Geez, just yesterday it seemed like we were 8 years old without a care in the world. What am I doing in this adult body, they didn't train me for this! Bang, here we go, just like that. Watch the road, you know, you gotta be wise. (Correction here) - BUT don't drive so slow. Yeah but not too wise, gotta mess up sometimes, gotta risk, gotta enjoy, gotta have those thrills. I think we live for those thrills. And when I was younger, those thrills were exactly that - drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. I've only recently discovered a much greater thrill - the thrill of living. Sometimes life is mundane, good God - it costs so much, takes so long... Do the cooking, do the cleaning, punch in the time clock. I get excited, but I get so impatient... Then there's those moments that are like. Wow. Where you just wanna scream, dance, shout it out loud. And this song makes me feel that way - had a moment with it out on my porch, dancing my little heart out, playing the air drums. And as I crawled back into my room, I realized. Everything is as it should be. Everything is perfect. Life is beautiful, life is wonderful. That is the deep spiritual thrill that keeps me coming back for more. All the pain, struggle, tears, mundaneness - it's all part of the plan. We've only just begun, and I feel like having fun - Here comes that thrill But I swear I'll be alright, until the next time - I'm certain, I can make it through all the trials of life, I'll be alright, until I get pack to that point of ultimate serenity, ultimate bliss, ultimate Love. Great tune. :) |

| FIDLAR – AWWWKWAARRRDDD Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| Absolutely love this song. It's funny how deep Fidlar seems to get without trying. At first it's like yeah, just a song about some awkward kids and their awkward doings. But there's a vibe to the song. It's almost like. Yeah, we're awkward. Maybe we wish we weren't, but we are. And ya know what, that's OK. And my life isn't always gonna go how I want it to. I'll probably fuck it up somehow, it'll probably be awkward. But ya know what, that's OK. We're still making our music, the best we know how. There's a deep spiritual aspect to this song, to this band. Much respect. | |
| The Mr. T Experience – Semi-OK Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
What a tune. I used to love this when I was like 15 jus because it was catchy and all but really had no idea what it meant, or bothered to delve into it. Funny how sometimes things just hit ya when you're ready to hear them. Now I'm 24, sober off of drugs and alcohol for 2 years, taking a look at myself, trying to make sense of life. What a great tune. So ya know, we're semi-OK. We're not really OK, we're glitched, life is messy, it doesn't work out the way we want it to. It hurts, we cry. We're not perfect, we make mistakes. We're confused. But despite all that, we're doing OK. We don't give up hope. With this development, distressingly content. I said some things I shouldn't have said to a girl I like, she just told me she wants to take a week off to think over her and I. I don't like it, I wish I had never said that stuff, I wish I wasn't glitched like that. I wonder if she's gonna want to see me again. I'm sad. But yknow what, with this development, I'm distressingly content. I feel OK about it. Even... Content. Distressingly - it's like, where is this coming from? Back in the day this was the cause for self-destruction. Great spirituality in this song. Love, love, love it. Take care all. :) |

| Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
It's amazing - I've heard this song so many times before, (loved Matilda), but never actually thought about the lyrics. Funny how stuff hits right when you're ready to hear it. Send me on my way. My tendency is to cling to the familiar. I think it's human. Then one day you realize the familiar isn't cutting it anymore. It's safe, but it's not giving me what I need. So. Send me on the way. Here I go. On an adventure, away from the familiar, into the unknown. Send me on my way. Sometime's well run, sometime's we'll crawl, but we're on the journey either way. I hadn't ridden a bike in 15 years, I live in a place without a car and now I need one to get around. I've been clumsy for the first couple of months. I saw a big hill today and saw an older gentlemen biking down it. I said. I'm going to do that. For the thrill of it. And I did. With this song playing. Take care all. |

| Smith Westerns – Varsity Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
Love this song! I used to only really hone in on the chorus. What is it - obviously a guy who's alone, or two separated lovers, either way - alone, and it's hard. But then I really started to get the verse. The guy is lonely and looking for someone or something to fill that hole. He's interested in the superficial - slow down, stranger, there are two kinds of good. He's more interested in conquering the girl for his own purposes, rather than actually loving the girl for who she is. Stranger she calls him, they don't even really know each other! One good - superficial pleasure/puppy love; the other good, the Supreme good, unconditional Love. Slow down, stranger - this second kind of love requires patience! I always had to win. Or I wasn't anything. It's not enough just to be with a person and appreciate him or her for who he or she is. I have to win. I have to conquer this person, be with this person. Otherwise I'm nothing. If she doesn't love me as a lover, it must be that I'm worth nothing. Throw friendship and anything else aside. That's not valuable to me. Guess it's a point of view? He has doubts, maybe it's not really that way, maybe this is just the portrait I'm painting in mind. In fact I think he knows this. Then the chorus. I think the guy gets it - he's barking up the wrong tree looking for Love. Supreme Love. The second kind of good. But that doesn't change the fact that he's lonely. Everybody wants somebody. Everybody needs somebody. Everybody deserves somebody. Yes unconditional Love is what we're after, we know that, but I still long for somebody to hold and to be held, right here, right now. Count the days, count the nights, but don't get by. And I ain't hangin on to you. Hmm. Never understood what he was saying til I read this. In one sense, perhaps he means it - I'd love somebody to hold, but I'm not hanging on to you, I'm going to live my life and get on with it. But also in the ironic sense - he pours his heart out, but then claims he ain't hangin on to you. Seems like a contradiction. Take it which way you want. :) This is my interpretation, as it very much relates to my life right now. Beautiful song with a wonderful mix of emotions. Captures the essence of life in a way. Ha! Take care all. |
