New Order – Leave Me Alone Lyrics 7 years ago
I think it’s about realizing how many people are lonely just like you are, and how everyone hides it so it’s hard to notice. A thousand islands in the sea, it’s a shame because they can’t see all the other lonely people because they’re hiding under ground. So maybe now he’s seeing just how many lonely people to connect with, a vision that would bring him luck. But he is stuck between reaching out to others, and asking people to leave him alone, like he’s used to doing.

One Direction – Diana Lyrics 10 years ago
Beautiful song, made me cry when I first heard it because the meaning was so obvious to me.

TRIGGER WARNING:
Mentions of suicide, self harm, depression, and abuse.

The front pages of your pictures,
They make you look so small,
How could someone not miss you at all?
(Maybe referring to Twitter icons(wild guess idk please don't laugh lmao), they feel that their existence is too simplified through these pictures because they know there is a complex life behind those pictures of themselves and they wish they could know all of their fans beyond these pictures. Despite what the assumedly suicidal fan thinks, people WILL miss them if they killed themselves)

I never would mistreat ya,
Oh I'm not a criminal
(Perhaps they're addressing their fans in this lyric who are abused by those who surround them and they want these fans to know that there are people out there who love and care about them)

I speak a different language but I still hear your call.
(These fans and the boys may not speak the same language but that doesn't mean the fans' cries for help are any less valid)

Diana,
Let me be the one to light a fire inside those eyes,
(Let me help you feel alive and happy)

You've been lonely,
You don't even know me,
But I can feel you crying,
(The fans have been lonely and they seek comfort in the boys. Despite the fans not knowing the boys personally, the boys can still feel their pain)

Diana,
Let me be the one to lift your heart up and save your life,
(Let me help you make it through this, don't hurt yourself)

I don't think you even realize baby you'd be saving mine.
(The fans don't realize it but while the boys are saving their lives, they are simultaneously saving the boys' lives)

It's only been four months but
You've fallen down so far.
(Idk I think they're talking about how bad everything can go for people in such a small amount of time)

How could someone mislead you at all?
(Why would anyone want to hurt these fans?)

I wanna reach out for you,
I wanna break these walls,
I speak a different language but I still hear you call.
(They wish they could just get to know every one of their fans on a personal level to comfort them)

We all need something,
This can't be over now,
(This is mutualistic relationship, we both need each other so please don't leave me)

If I could hold you,
Swear I'd never put you down.
(Self explanatory)

Ok fuck I'm crying by the end of this interpretation. It's just so fucking beautiful lol. I also suspect that they used the name 'Diana' as a symbol for princess Diana who struggled very much with depression, self harm, and suicidal thoughts.

One Direction – Story Of My Life Lyrics 10 years ago
So from the lyrics alone I interpreted the song to be about nostalgia specifically of a relationship. But watching the video muddled up my previous understanding of the song because the video is about family and the past.

So what I interpret from the song is this:
Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain
(The memories of the relationship linger on the walls of his heart or mind)

I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days
(He keeps his heart open in hopes that she will come back to him but she never does)

She told me in the morning
She don't feel the same about us in her bones
(And this is where he talks about the beginning of the end; when she suddenly expresses her feelings to him about the relationship. Hint: she doesn't feel too great about it)

It seems to me that when I die
These words will be written on my stone
(He will always remember that moment and those words will haunt him for the rest of his life)

And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The ground beneath my feet is open wide
The way that I've been holdin' on too tight
With nothing in between
(He put everything he had into the relationship, "holding on too tight with nothing in between", and now that the relationship is over, he has nothing to keep him from feeling hollow and empty. It's kinda like the expression "the rug being pulled out from under you", he didn't expect the relationship to end and that's why he put everything he had into it and he's scrambling to find something that can save him from descending into a deep darkness)

The story of my life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm and time
Is frozen
(The story of his life: typical of him to try so hard to give her everything, to "drive all night to keep her warm", and "time is frozen", the suspense of whether what he gives will be enough)

The story of my life, I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke inside
The story of my life
(Again, typical: he makes her think that this time he will get it right, giving her hope, but he takes too much time to get it right, spending her love, and leaving her exhausted)

Written on these walls are
The colors that I can't change
(The feelings he has attached to these memories are inseparable from the memories themselves; it's basically a package deal of memory+sadness)

Leave my heart open
But it stays right here in it's cage
(This time instead of opening his heart so SHE has the option to come back, he leaves his heart open so he has the option to go out and get her. But, he's too afraid to leave the confines in which he keeps his heart)

I know that in the morning now,
I'll see us in the light upon a hill
(He has hope that they will repair their relationship)

Although I am broken, my heart is untamed, still
(Even though he knows it's over and he's absolutely crushed about it, he loves her so much and is still optimistic about a happy ending even though he's aware of its unlikelihood)

And I've been waiting for this time to come around
(So he finally worked up the courage to go and get her back)

But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds
(But he can't seem to reach her to express his yearning for their old love)

Anyway, the song goes on to repeat "the story of my life", emitting a kind of "aw man just my luck" feeling; typical him, breaking girls hearts despite trying his hardest to make it work, and then trying to get her back after they're through but she is long gone. It's actually pretty sad when you think about it.

Cage the Elephant – Cigarette Daydreams Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song may be about a girl who was sexually assaulted. I wouldn't have been able to infer that from solely the lyrics, I am guessing the meaning off of the lyrics and the official music video.

In the music video there are a few clips of a hand moving up the skirt of a girl and the girl crying. The lyric 'you were only 17' makes me think this girl was only 17 when she was assaulted.

Often times, victims of sexual assault struggle to find a meaning or motive behind the assault, wanting to categorize their pain under something that makes sense. They blame themselves, they want to know why they were assaulted, why them specifically. They try to find answers, essentially, but usually don't get the answers they're looking for because there isn't a valid reason behind sexual assault.

Idk. This song makes me cry sometimes though because interpreting the lyrics the way I did is truly heart breaking.

One Direction – A.M. Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is written from the perspective of someone who is reminiscing their past with someone they love.

The narrator wants to go back to adolescence where everything, including this relationship, was much simpler than the present. The meaning of the first verse is pretty self evident:

// Feels like this could be forever tonight
Break these clouds, forget about time
There could be a World War three goin' on outside //
They are so caught up in each other that nothing else matters at the time besides their bubble of safety that surrounds them when they have these late night (or early morning) conversations.

// You and me were raised in the same part of town
Got these scars on the same ground //
This could be either literal or figurative. They might be referring to actually growing up together or they could be referring to coming from similar backgrounds.

// Remember how we used to kick around just wasting time? //
This lyric I imagine a couple of teenagers kicking a soccer ball around hahaha but I think it also refers to the effortless quality about their relationship; just glad to be around each other no matter what they were doing.

And then the chorus:

// Won't you stay 'til the A.M.?
All my favourite conversations
Always made in the A.M //
Late-night conversations are usually connoted with honesty and/or intimacy and those types of conversations are what the narrator values most.

// 'Cause we don't know what we're saying
We're just swimmin' 'round in our glasses
And talkin' out of our asses
Like we're all gonna make it, yeah yeah //
I interpret "swimmin around in our glasses" to compare a fish, kept in a small glass bowl with no other option but swimming around and around their bowl, to high-aspiring teenagers. So the couple in this song obviously individually have large goals for later in life, believing that they're "all gonna make it". But either the past them or present them recognize how hard it is to actually pursue your dreams. They are stuck in this glass bowl, being able to see out of it but not realizing there is no escape from their confinements of what I presume to be reality.

The third verse:
// Feels like this could be forever right now
Don't wanna sleep cause we're dreaming out loud
Trying to behave but you know that we never learn, ha //
Again, considering things such as time to be trivial when they are in their own little world. They're too interested in sharing their aspirations in life to each other to go to sleep. They also know that they should go to sleep, but that doesn't change the fact that they won't.

Bridge:
// Ooh, you know I'm always coming back to this place
Ooh, you know
And I'll say
Ooh, you know I'm always gonna look for your face
Ooh, you know //
Now, the bridge makes me think that their relationship has ended but the narrator can't help but feel nostalgic of their memories together, specifically their memories of staying up talking a bunch of shit with each other.

So, all in all, the narrator misses the simplicity of their lives and of their relationship when they were teenagers. I love this song SO much because i am 16 right now and it really does feel like anything is possible. I think it somehow also captures how scary growing up is, although I couldn't pinpoint any specific lyric to support that, just the feeling I get from listening to the song and reading the lyrics.

Anyway that was probably a stupid interpretation but I adore this song so I think it deserves some love in the comment section :-)
