I think this song is clearly about two lovers, who start with no strings attached, as You can see in the first verse: "I know I stand in line Until you think You have the time To spend an evening with me And if we go Someplace to dance I know that There's a chance You won't be Leaving with me" In further lines it occures that even though they didn't want a relationship, they fell in love with each other, but they're to shy to admit it while sober, so as they become braver after the alcohol, they finally say it. "Then afterwards We drop into A quiet little place And have a drink or two And then I go And spoil it all By saying something stupid Like I love you" They are stressing over admiting what they feel for each other, cause they are worried that the other person is not feeling the same. "I can see it in your eyes That you despise The same old lines You heard the night before And though it's Just a line to you For me it's true And never seemed So right before" They try to find the right words, not to get misunderstood, they try to postpone it. "I practice every day To find some Clever lines to say To make the meaning Come through But then I think I'll wait until the Evening gets late And I'm alone with you" They show how everything is perfect, but they're afraid that they're going to spoil the night, by admiting the truth. I believe this song is much deeper than just talking about past relationship. Every time I hear this song, I see the situation where two people had an accident and one of them is dead and the other one is currently in a state which makes it possible for him to communicate with dead people but is still alive. Starting with the lines: "I can't go any further than this I want you so badly, it's my biggest wish" - The girl is already dead, she has a connection with her love, that has survived the accident, but she can't cross the line, she can't touch, cuddle or kiss him and that's exactly what she needs. First verse is the answer to that, it says: "I spent my time just thinking thinking thinking 'bout you Every single day yes, I'm really missin' missin' you And all those things we use to use to use to do Hey girl, whats up, it use to be just me and you I spent my time just thinking thinking thinking 'bout you Every single day, yes I'm really missing missing you And all those things we use to use to use to do Hey girl whats up, whats up, whats up, whats up" Repeating himself, the guy is trying to emphasize his feelings after the loss. He wants to be with the woman and come back to everyday life, that they used to live but the accident separated them for good. He asks a rhetorical question "whats up" - meaning how could something like this happen, when they were living such a carefree life and suddenly it fell apart. "Can you meet me halfway, right at the borderline It's where I'm gonna wait, for you I'll be looking out, night n'day Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I stay I can't go any further than this I want you so bad it's my only wish" She tells him that one day, when he'll be ready, she will wait for him to come cause she will love him endlessly. Woman is not able to get back her life but one day they will unite - on the day of his death. "Girl, I travel round the world and even sail the seven seas Across the universe I go to other galexies Just tell me where to go, just tell me where you wanna to meet I navigate myself myself to take me where you be Cause girl I want, I, I, I want you right now I travel uptown (town) I travel downtown I wanna to have you around (round) like every single day I love you alway' ways" The man says he will do everything to be with her again, he is using enumeration to tell, that he'll use every possible way to get to her, confirming it in last line (always / all ways).
