| The Offspring – Self Esteem Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| This song is like a composite of a few ex-relationships stretching back a long way. I've had a couple of women, maybe the only two with whom I experienced love live or at least explosive mutual interest at first sight, swear that they were in love with me and that I had their heart. Then each of them, years apart, continued to sleep with their incumbent boyfriends and didn't get together with me even though I tried everything in my control. I even had a later boy friend tell me - not happy about it - that one of them was mad about me. Yet she was sleeping with him, not me. WTF. I've had the 3 AM booty calls. I've had the breaking up can't break up. It's not one abusive relationship but this immense variety of WTF moments across several relationships over years and years. Amazing song. | |

I don't see this beautifully poetic song as a love song, but as a deep song about loss and time passing. It seems to be about somebody who has died or become unreachable. Referring to the daily news, he indicates that falling over someone, possibly reading about her in the papers, is his news. This point suggests an unexpected encounter with somebody that prompted poetic feelings. Angels fall like rain, and love is unreachable. Perhaps, an old friend has died. Time within her (us) moves, but the ghost within her (us) doesn't fade. He's on the side of someone, but it also takes him down, making him ambivalent between her or running away. She's somebody special, but love . . . he can't even give it away. He's not going to something, and urging somebody not to go, possibly to a funeral, because the talk and supermen waste time and get in the way of truth. Tears, perhaps, are like rain, and love is only heaven away. |
