personaly i think it's a moral story on a prison island, like alcatraz, but more desolate and isolated. the moral makes the song have a between the lines meaning of strenght and courage in a weird way. the verse "we do our time like pennies in a jar," coincides with this statement. the courage comes from the fact that unlike those around him, the character maintains just enough sanity to stay alive and continue asking for a reason to continue living through the pain. |
