Band of Horses – Blue Beard Lyrics 7 years ago
It seems like the line "I used to see the night so anxious" could definitely be a metaphor for a fear of dying. Especially when you consider the next verse:

"What if we die, no end and no conclusion
How could you smile, just walk away
Well I don't know, I don't know"

@[jimmays:7047] On second thought the lyric about the rope probably represents slowly cutting off all belief in god, until he's all alone. A soul surrounded by the "darkness" of non-belief

I feel like Andy Hull writes about his struggle with his feelings about god a lot in his songs, this one too.

When he talks about sailing a ship into the sky, and being alone on the other side, thats dying and contemplating the possibility of no after life.

The rope being pulled higher is about dying by hanging, and the reference to a firefly i think represents the glow of something living on after death.

The voice of God whispering about fear being wonderful/magical, suggests the belief of the afterlife that it cultivates is "good."

The lake is the contemplation of death, and the stones he skips across it are (logical?) thoughts that resist sinking deeper into the possibility of no god or afterlife.

"Making sure were both wonderful," suggests he resists the thoughts of no god or afterlife to make sure his relationship with god is "wonderful."

I think the rest follows along in this same vein. Awesome song!
