It's definitely not by accident that Krist Novoselic plays bass on this track. It's a tribute to Kurt, and Dave is singing about how he should have seen Kurt's suicide coming but didn't because he was his friend. I usually hate when people say every Foo Fighters song is about Kurt. I realize this song could be about any lost loved one, but Krist featuring on it makes it pretty obvious who this one is about. |

| I think it's about leaving your hometown and going somewhere else. In the first verse he is bored of the "two bit town" he lives in, and in the second verse he decides to leave ("But I don't wanna have to stay/In the morning I'm leaving"). Needtobreathe is from a small town in South Carolina, so I think the chorus is about how everyone there knows him and treats him like a rock star ("Bright lights they won't leave me alone") and the singer is just tired of it and wants to go somewhere we he can get away from being treated like a celebrity. | |
