When the song starts out he's just told her that he loves her or some version of the depth and intensity of his feelings for her. Maybe they started off as a casual thing? It sounds like they has a conversation about their relationship and he assured her that he wasn't afraid but couldn't bring himself to say exactly how deeply he feels for her. He finally gets the courage and tells her how he feels. You walked in and said, "I've got some news I didn't say all I wanted to You know I told you that I wasn't scared. Well, I lied." You told me, "Babe I only think of you." She explains she feels the same way and admits that she's scared too because of her past relationships. She goes on to say that she doesn't want to pressure him but she also wants him to love her. She's willing to let it evolve. And I said, "All I've got is a bunch of sad stories." And I told them all before the night was through And we cried, oh, but we're here now And I'm trying hard to make you love me but I don't wanna try too hard And I'm trying hard to take it lightly but we're here now To chorus to me, is about the four "walls" or chambers of his heart. That is where she can exhale. They have come to be a home for her. Their love is where she found her home. Those four walls now are the only place that I can breathe out Those four walls now are home Those three words now are the only thing that came to save me Those three words now are home She wants to tell him how much she feels for him. She's falling for him. Again, she reiterates she doesn't want to try too hard or force him, but she loves him too. She recalls the early days of their relationship "you're everything I need tonight" and "I was thinking you got what you came for" meaning she was trying to keep it light because she was unsure if it was just a physical thing with him. She didn't want to be the first one to say how she felt. She's relieved he did. I wanna make you feel how I feel when I'm listening to love songs I wanna take you to the peak of everything that you are You're everything I need tonight And I'm trying hard to make you want me But I don't wanna try too hard I was thinking you got what you came for But you're here now She repeats the chorus and says "these three words are the only thing that can save me". She recognizes that his love saved her. Falling at the hand of a perfect man Falling at the hand of a perfect man She admits that he is the perfect man for her and that she's "falling at his hand". Meaning she fell for him but he caught her because he fell for her too. I saw a related post on a different website and they have a quite opposite interpretation of this song...I'm not sure what they are referring to and I feel that the greater purpose is missed. |

| Hozier – Work Song Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| This song gives me chills it is so incredible. He moves through the song describing the depth of their relationship. Though he may be a bad boy, he's a good man. His "baby never asks none about what his hands or his body done." She doesn't care if he is a opportunist and has a woman for a night because "when my time comes around lay me gently in the cold dark earth. no grave could hold my body down I crawl home to her." Their love and connection is so strong that even death can't keep him from being with her. They have an understanding that most people wouldn't comprehend. | |
| Hozier – Like Real People Do Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I see this song as being about both people recognizing that they have pasts but are ready to move forward together in their new relationship. In the very beginning of the song he credits her to bringing him back to life. I had a thought, dear However scary About that night The bugs and the dirt Why were you digging? What did you bury Before those hands pulled me From the earth? He realizes that she had to bury her past to move into the future with him. I knew that look dear Eyes always seeking Was there in someone That dug long ago So I will not ask you Why you were creeping In some sad way I already know Even though she let her past hurt cause her to be more cautious entering this relationship with him, he's not angry. He understands because he's been through a lot too. He keeps reiterating that he won't ask her about it or pressure her to tell him and she'll do the same for him. He makes it a point to say now that they have put the past to rest they should just "kiss like real people do" because they're love is alive and well. |
