Coldplay – Square One Lyrics 9 years ago
You're in control, is there anywhere you wanna go?
You're in control, is there anything you wanna know?
The future's for discovering
The space in which we travel in

To me, this first verse is talking about our need for independence, but also the universal need to explore the world, who we are, and how we are all on the same planet.

From the top of the first page
To the end of the last day
From the start in your own way
You just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are

From the time we are born until the day we die, we all make connections with other people. Some days, we may feel totally out of place and misunderstood in the world (which is where the song gets really personal for me). Some days, you just want somebody to listen to what you have to say.You want to know that you are not alone in this world, that you are understood, and that you are loved. We all have a need for love and understanding. It doesn't matter who you are.

Under the surface trying to break through
Deciphering the codes in you
I need a compass, draw me a map
I'm on the top, I can't get back

We all are on a journey to discover who we are as people, why we do the things we do, and why others do what they do. Sometimes we're clueless and wish we had a compass or a map to guide us, but it's never that easy. When we finally feel like we've figured things out, we feel we're "on the top and can't get back" (this could be totally wrong, but this line is the hardest one in the song in my opinion).

Is there anybody out there who
Is lost and hurt and lonely, too?
Are they bleeding all your colors into one?
And if you come undone
As if you've been run through
Some catapult, it fired you
You wonder if your chance will ever come
Or if you're stuck in square one

Finally, this last part of the song is my favorite. It always gets me super emotional whenever I listen to it because I can relate to it so much. Some days you feel stuck, and that nobody will ever understand you. You feel "lost, hurt and lonely" and you wonder if there's anybody who feels the same way in this big world. You wonder if something another person went through could be so similar to yours that your colors would just bleed into one. Some days you feel like the world has been so unfair to you, that you feel "as if you've been run through", and when you finally feel like you're getting somewhere, something bad happens and you're catapulted right back into square one. You feel hopeless. You "wonder if your chance will ever come", but nothing ever seems to go right.

Sorry if this interpretation was a bit depressing. It's just my interpretation and what the song means to me personally. I hope this gave some insight, though :)
