It's a shame nobody interpretates the song. So here are some coins. First what you should know is: The song is from 1952. Written by a german lyricist for the film "Alraune" starring Hildegard Knef who first sang the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJaYArdfQbg In 1984 Nico covered the song on her album "Camera Obscura". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4peFis8bmgg I think the song is about a phenomenon we these days call Borderline. "She gently embraced her toy before the smashed it on the floor." (As a german I do think @[TwinStripe:6850] [http://songmeanings.com/profiles/view/17280444/] s translation is the best of the few me have here.) A problem many victims of Borderliners might know. Without self consciouness Borderliners test the love of others towards theirselfes. (Like other mentally diseased characters do.) They maybe are really gentle to their "toys" and then become harsh to them. Because they need to know if someone loves em. And most of us hopefully know: Love is (like faith) not about knowing, it needs some doubts. So the only thing we know about the Lonely Maiden is, that she's beautiful: Blonde her hair, red her lips. That makes probably a number of "toys" fall in love with her. She use to break them. Even him who brought her 1000 roses and promised to ease her pain. Without - as mentioned - self consciousness she is not even sure about her beauty. But men come, she tests em how true their love is and they will break. So she remains lonely. But what you might already have guessed from the beginning of the song: There will be now happy end. And one of the many toys kills her. We know: St Peter is heaven's doormen (additionally he's the patron of the possessed ;-) ). He let's her wait two eternyties. It's maybe both: Punishment, but also the knowledge that she is not just evil. She is - like her victims - a victim of her life, maybe her parents, her youth. She did not learn self consciousness. So she used to test how true the love of her "toys" is. And all that is the sadness that you can hear in music and - if you understand - the lyrics. |
