It seems that he had a pretty rough fight with his long time wife, said some thing he didn't mean, grabbed the car and started to drive day by day to nowhere, away from where he was. He felt relieved and free, things that apparently had no place in his life before then. Throughout the song there are signs of suicidal thoughts, depression, vengeance and regret. A rush of despair comes into him, as he comes to understand himself gradually. All his motives gets questioned, his part of the guilt understood and his thoughts cleansed by the trip and his experiences. Then he comes back to her. |

Thinking that the so referred mother in the lyrics is actually the government makes more sense not only for the song itself as well as for the perfect fit of the rest of the story in the conceptual album this song is a part of.
However, as a musician, I also feel that some of the stanzas of this lyrics depicts exactly how we end up feeling deep inside, mainly due to the way that the music industry has grown up to operate, and - more widely - the way we are sort of "forced" to use our expertises to make money and a living out of it. In the song, I personally undertand it as composing songs and perfoming live, and since Daniel has a high standard for music composition/live perfomance, choosing between composing what you really want and what would give you more green in your pocket is a painful decision (sometimes between comfort and fun). This might happen mainly because society forces us to be one of them, do the same things and fall into a given category.
If we read upon the books "1984" and "Brave New World", it is notable that a small part of us can't fit in these categories, but we are gradually forced to, or life would be even harder.
Not sure what he chose and in which level. However, from this album forward (The Perfect Element pt. I), it is noticeable that melodies came to be more accessible, reaching an even more plain approach on Scarsick, leaning towards it even more on both Road Salts. |

@[almansor:21666] I don't think so. This is a conceptual album and Daniel has spoken before about it, saying that the whole album is about the human blame on disrupting the nature and themselves with war and pollution. |

@[AeroLed286:15635] David refused to sing the song, according to him, "it did not look relaxed in his voice ampliture" or something. I think I read this in on one of the Pink Floyd books I own. By the way, they didn't get Roy Harper to sing it. He was recording his album in Abbey Road at the same week, he saw what was happening and offered to help. In exchange, Gilmour played guitar and sang for one of his songs in his album. |

Seems to be about religion, and some crazy nonsense that the bible tells. Also, it says some things about him accepting death and becoming someone that will now dwell the universe (far away), becoming a star that is no longer bright.
The video shows the bible some times. Ormen means "snake" in Swedish and Norwegian. (Adam and eve). How many times does an angel fall (Lucifer). |

I agree with @[Longandweirdname:6976] and @[remedie:6977]. If you listen to kingdom of loss on Scarsick, its even more evident that the subject was political. |
