| @[blackcoop:28316] Thank you for this incredibly deep and thorough analysis. I came here looking for help in navigating Adam's surrealistic and metaphorical imagery, and this is exactly what I was looking for! The 'predator and prey' elements mixed with blissful romance never made sense to me, and it is only now after reading your post that it finally all clicks. Thank you | |

This is one of my favorite tracks from Adam, due to it's fantastic whimsy and happy-go-lucky-ness charm. I had believed for a number of years that this song was about being shot down while approaching a girl, but I think my viewpoint has changed. I think Adam might be commenting on the 'Stranger Danger' aspects of our society, that when a guy like him approaches a girl, she reacts in a scared and defensive way. John Mulaney has a joke on this subject as well, where he was just being his kid-self walking down the street, but going the same way as a girl, who noticed and panicked thinking he was following her. He says "She thinks I'm going to rape her, because we are adults, and adults rape each other. I just wanted to say 'No, I'm not going to rape you, because I am a little boy!'" I think Adam is touching on this topic a bit, because it is irrational for a guy like him, or a guy as portrayed in the song, to be considered dangerous to a girl because he is very much a Dick Van Dyke kind of wholesome, yet here he is getting attacked out of fear. Basically a few guys are ruining it for the rest of us by giving men a bad name. |
