I looked at it like they was asking him what he's doing there as he appears like he's happy and shouldn't be in a place like that.. But he's there because he's the same as everyone else present.. I think the relationship is the drive.. He's saying they've been on this journey a long time now(changing of night to light etc) road is the journey of the relationship it's been long and straight but now he wants to take a separate road!!
