The Weeknd – Twenty Eight Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't think this song is about a girl at all. I believe this song is a metaphor for his fame.

The first verse is saying how this house is not a home (this fame and his new life doesn't feel like home) and that it's obvious that the popularity isn't going to go away and he should have known what was going to happen. For the longest time he didn't show his face because he didn't want to be famous. But after time, he opened up and now he's a mainstream icon.

I think the second verse is talking about his fans from the beginning when he first started putting his music out. People didn't know who he was but loved his shit. He wishes that the small fanbase he had that loved his music just kept it quite and let him do his thing. (Girl you could have been the one) pretty much saying, you had my music, it could have been your thing you didn't have to blow it up. (Did you have to tell the world, now your girls all wanna fuck) basically saying did you have to tell everyone about my music, now everyone wants to hear it and become fans.

The last verse is simply saying if he would have shown his fans his face and who he really was if he knew he would become so famous. Everyone told him he didn't belong and wouldn't make it big, but they were wrong. And he wishes they were right. He would rather put out music and not be known except by his small group of die hard fans.

That's my interpretation.
