OneRepublic – Apologize Lyrics 10 years ago
There are a lot of comments on this song already, most of them right. I just thought I'd throw my two cents in, though, since this song reminds me so much of my parents. My mom has been through a lot with my dad ... I really can't imagine what it'd be like to be her. As it is I have absolutely zero respect for him, but anyway, this song is just like their relationship, only it would be my mom singing about my dad rather than the guy singing about the girl.

"I'm holding on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground"

This gives me the impression that they're still together since he's still holding onto her rope; he says she's got him ten feet off the ground, meaning that he can't drop. I think he probably is planning on it, eventually, but isn't quite ready yet. Figuratively, he needs to somehow get her to lower the rope. I don't know what's keeping them together after everything she's put him through ... I guess he's probably still in love with her, somewhat ... but in the case of my mom, she feels like she can't divorce my dad until my younger brothers are adults and would be less affected by their breakup.

"And I'm hearing what you say, but I just can't make a sound"

I guess he probably has tried to talk to her about what's wrong ... she seems to be receptive, but he's been through this game so many times now he just can't accept what she's saying anymore.

"You tell me that you need me then you go and cut me down, but wait"

He's obviously talked about breaking up before, and she gives him the song and dance about how she loves him, needs him, etc. etc., but she doesn't treat him like it. Words might sound nice the first time around, but your actions speak louder, and she obviously hasn't kept her word. She's broken all trust between the two of them.

"You tell me that you're sorry, didn't think I'd turn around, and say (that)
" 'It's too late to apologize (it's too late)'
" 'I said, "It's too late to apologize (it's too late)' "

This basically just sums up the first few lines; it kind of puts the whole relationship into perspective and backs my point that he can't trust her anymore, no matter how much he probably wants to.

"I'd take another chance, take a fall, take a shot for you"

This line shows me that he's still in love, though that love is dying. It's kind of like he used to want it to work out, but now he just wishes it would. He'd take another chance, even if it did mean that they'd have pitfalls, etc., since he believes that there's no such thing as "happily ever after." But he also knows that since she'll never change, it won't work out ... he just wishes it would, he wishes she'd change. He'd take another chance if he thought she would.

"And I need you like a heart needs a beat, but it's nothin' new (yeah)"

Yeah, running into that line again, he's definitely in love with her still, but like I said, he's just coming to terms with the fact that it'll never work out.

"I loved you with a fire red, now it's turning blue"

But that love is dying ... it's received a mortal wound. He knows it, regrets it, but he's been through so much in the past that even when she's playing nice, he can't handle it because he knows it's just a game. At least, that's what I'm guessing.

"And you say 'Sorry' like the angel heaven let me think was you, but I'm afraid..."

I've covered this already, I guess ... she says sorry, but it's just not enough. Apologizing is nothing if you don't change, and she's proven to him that she's not going to.

" 'It's too late to apologize (it's too late)'
"I said, 'It's too late to apologize (it's too late)

" 'It's too late to apologize (it's too late)'
"I said, 'It's too late to apologize (it's too late)'

"I said, "It's too late to apologize, yeah (too late)
"I said, "It's too late to apologize, yeah (too late)'

"I'm holdin' on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground"

Again, he knows that their relationship is in essence over, but he's still holding onto her rope - because she's got him ten feet off the ground. But the moment he can, he's walking away forever ... closing the door on the relationship.

I guess that's probably a kind of weird interpretation, but that was just my takeaway when I finally decided to listen to the lyrics instead of just the tune today. I'm not going to go into what's really going on in their relationship since it could really be anything ... that's supposed to be interpreted by the listener ... but the obvious part is what I covered.
