Twenty One Pilots – House of Gold Lyrics 8 years ago
looks like the general consensus takes a very literal approach. some of the wall interpretations here (greek myth, jesus/mary), but thats cool. stuff i would have not thought of.

my take comes from the darkness that a lot of TOP songs come from and its a bit tragic. yes, it is about a mother and son, but in my head, the son is a young boy who is the one dying. so of course mom doesn't want him to go, and of course the son goes along with and says he'll stay around to take care of. goes on to make more promises he can't keep (cure her of disease, put her on the map), because while they are day dreaming, why not go all out!? so the chorus is basically them day dreaming together.

the verses are where i really get my take on things. if it was the mom or dad dying, the kid wouldn't have to promise to stick around, the expected outcome is that a kid will out live parents. this is not their future though:

Let's say we up and left this town,
And turned our future upside down.
We'll make pretend that you and me,
Lived ever after happily.

they are taking the time to imaging what their life would be like if the son wasn't going to die.

but their dreams are dead. everything they had planned for their lives, all their hopes and dreams died when the kid was diagnosed with some terminal and incurable disease:

Oh and since we know that dreams are dead,
And life turns plans up on their head
I will plan to be a bum,
So I just might become someone.

knowing what they know now, they joke that since life messes things up and turns them upside down, they should've planned the worst so they could get the best. its a sad song, but its also just a glimpse into the love of a family shares in their final days together and dreaming about the future they wanted and trying to live it out together in the short time they have.

@[davidbamford:17669] props for referencing Zacchaeus, but for this song I'm not seeing it. Especially since he starts off saying he knows that he is standing in the trees silently. With Zacchaeus, Jesus was never in the tree and Jesus spoke to him and called him down. This song seems more like a struggle with faith and in your darkest hours, when you're sick of falling into the same sinful patterns, all you want is to hear and know God and find peace, but you're struggle to find it.

@[Keeson:17668] once i learned Tyler was raised a Christian, this song became pretty clear. you summed it up well. Prior to that, I thought he was calling the "person" in the trees a coward, but it's clear now he's the one standing as a coward. Any believer struggles with doubt. I've been there and prayed and prayed and prayed, hoping, begging to SEE Him, to hear Him. Prayer alone has never sufficed. It isn't until I'm in prayer AND reading the bible, thats where He is. He is the Word. A find my peace there with him.

Twenty One Pilots – Oh, Ms. Believer Lyrics 9 years ago
I discovered Twenty One Pilots while streaming music and started listening to all their albums. Usually during work, so I never actually learned song titles right away. When this song came on, I originally thought he was saying "misbeliever." So my thoughts on the song meaning are like what @[ginnyboy:17665] posted on 05/03/2016. Not saying it can't be about a girl, BUT...from what I've read, apparently the first song he wrote about a girl is "Tear In My Heart", soooo...

This is it right here, folks. @[halflife213:6268] perfectly described what @[TremorGabe:6269] mentioned and what is going on in the song. People are looking for a easy face value answer with heroine and rape, but they can't touch the bottom. The meaning is DEEPer than that.
