Bring Me the Horizon – Avalanche Lyrics 9 years ago
Oli said on the TTS album commentary that he was diagnosed with ADHD recently. It hit him pretty hard because he has been living his life up until that point without that knowledge. He said his world view was a little skewed after being diagnosed and felt like his head wasn't meant for the world. Hence the lyric "give me a remedy, because my head wasn't wired for this world"

Bring Me the Horizon – Blacklist Lyrics 9 years ago
blacklist (noun): a list of people or products viewed with suspicion or disapproval

About some bastard, probably Curtis. They got a lot of beef with their former guitarists (Curtis and Jona both), considering pretty biting songs have been written about them (Blacklist and Antivist, respectively).

Asking Alexandria – Gone Lyrics 9 years ago
Some people be complaining about how this song is a pace off and "too soft", but it fits after the ballads that are Here I Am and Send Me Home.

I love it personally. It's quiet but powerful, and Ben has a nice voice (that's him singing on the track, not Denis). It fits the themes of departure and starting anew that are heavily present throughout the album.

Asking Alexandria – Circled By The Wolves Lyrics 9 years ago
A lot of the songs on this album at first appear to be about Danny Worsnop and his departure, but this one really... isn't.

It's about the people who thought the band would end after he up and left. Main point are the last two lyrics:

"Who the hell are you any way?
Who the fuck are you to say we're done for?"

Like the people on the internet and in the scene saying they were nothing without Danny, and honestly, this album proves them wrong. Danny lost his heart and passion for heavy music long before he left, and AA is so much better off without his mess and drama.

Circled by the Wolves is a promise for a future of AA. A heavy, passionate future filled with emotion and screaming.

Lights – Lucky Ones Lyrics 9 years ago
All of the bonus tracks on this album are better than some of the songs on the album. There, I said it.

Towards the end of the song, you can hear a man singing in the background, and that's Beau Bokan, Light's husband.

The song is an ode to the craziness of life, and how no one really knows how to figure it all out, but finding another person to share it with makes it a lot less hectic and scary. Love is crazy, love is unforgiving, but it is so rewarding and is the best comfort of human emotion.

Issues – Tears on the Runway Pt. 2 Lyrics 9 years ago
God, I love all the versions of Tears on the Runway. Tyler's version, the acoustic, and this one are all amazing.

Anyway, this is about a really complex relationship that is influenced by distance and poor communication. They don't want to quite end it, but at the same time, they don't want to keep up the work it takes to be in their hard relationship.

"I used to live for the chase, but now I know better."

They once enjoyed the distance and complexity, and still do to some extent, but it's grown tiresome.

Also, I think the runway (as in, a plane runway) is a metaphor for leaving the relationship; they left their "tears on the runway," meaning they were sad when they left, but knew they would come back at some point because "they love the chase."

Bring Me the Horizon – And the Snakes Start to Sing Lyrics 9 years ago
So in the live DVD at Wembly, Oli started this song off by saying to the crowd, "This song's about bastards."

The entirety of Sempiternal is about Oli during his rough times, and there are a few about how there were people in his life that did not come to his aid when he really needed it, which proved they were only his friends for his fame/money and not because they cared about him. I think this can also be traced to lovers he had or whatever.

Though a lot of the album is about anger at oneself and self-reflection on past deeds, there are some songs about how the toxic/"fake" people made it worse.

Bring Me the Horizon – Follow You Lyrics 9 years ago
Oli said he had written this song a few years back and found it while digging for material for TTS.

In the album commentary, he says it was written when him "and [his] other half were going through a particularly rough patch" (his other half being his longtime girlfriend, now wife, Hannah). In his words, it was a sort of apology for his behavior and his show of devotion to her.

So no, it's about a person (pretty rare for Oli because he tries to be general in most songs) and not drugs or whatever.

Tonight Alive – Bathwater Lyrics 9 years ago
Bathwater is a metaphor for sadness and being overcome with it. As the bathwater drains, she is drained of the negative emotions and recovers from the crippling depression.

This whole album, in Jenna's words, is "about a relationship I had that went sour due to many reasons, and I felt so helpless to stop it."

Attila – About That Life Lyrics 9 years ago
I dunno man, they're tote's some good Christian rock.

"Making money like a surgeon
And we stack it to the roof
Because my pockets started hurting
Balling and hauling and taking over like I'm Stalin"

I started crying when I heard these lyrics omfg

Honestly, these guys are just living their lives... while they're kinda strange, they're allowed to do that.

Lights – Child Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about Lights' anxiety about being a mother, since she still feels like she is a kid herself.

Much of Little Machines was written and recorded while Lights was pregnant, and actually was recording vocals when she went into labor. I was actually surprised that there ended up being less references to motherhood, save for this song.

Anyway, I think the biggest giveaway to the meaning is "What do I know, I’m a child/Just trying to talk like a mother does" because here, Lights mentions "mother" as a subject, which in less geeky terms, simply means she is talking about herself as a mother.

Lights is concerned that, up to this point in her life, she has been the child -- innocent, naive, and looked after (in a mental extent -- she's in her late twenties and can most likely take care of herself physically). But now, carrying another human being, she realizes that she must mature mentally in order for her daughter to be safe, healthy, and most importantly, a child. It's scary, but Lights realizes she doesn't have to grow up; she just has to be mature.

I think she's done a great job -- Lights is a wonderful mother to her nearly two year old girl Rocket. What I wouldn't give to hang out with the Bokans, honestly.

PVRIS – Demon Limbs Lyrics 10 years ago
After much listening to the acoustic version and the original EP version, I think this song is about art, as a whole, impacting a world yet it being taken for granted.

Lynn puts her own spin on it by saying that the "demons at the door are patiently waiting," as in, the evils of the world and those within herself are driving her to become fake, a false person that is overcome with hopelessness and futility ("composed of broken bones and demon limbs")

"So please watch over me/and be the light to carry me" is a line that could be meant to be religious, but it really cannot be since PVRIS has stated multiple times they are not religious, and they just like the imagery/symbols of religion as a storytelling metaphor. Instead, it is Lynn asking her creativity, to bring purpose and light into her life of hopelessness and negativity.

Finally, the line that convinced me of my interpretation,

"this world is a masterpiece
a canvas sheet held accountable for such losses
shout-out to the artist
who took his heart and his soul
and lost them both in the process"

Here is where the art is taken for granted and dismissed. There are so many great things about this world, and so many positive and negative feelings go into them to make them exist. The artist highlights the "small beauties" of the world when it seems, at times, there is only looming evil. They take all of their time and energy to funnel into a piece of art that, in the end, could be an extension of their soul. Yet, when too many people are afraid to stop and admire the nice art and instead focus on the pressing negatives, the artist feels worthless.

TL;DR this song is about Lynn's analysis of art in this world, where it is necessary but taken for granted. It also includes her own feeling about art/expression, in which she needs it to NOT be a false person of only the negative ("demon limbs")

Bring Me the Horizon – Deathbeds (feat. Hannah Snowdon) Lyrics 10 years ago
This is about Hannah Sykes, Oli's wife (girlfriend at the time this song was made).

There's a girl singing in the background, and that's Hannah. I really think it's a beautiful song about their devotion. They obviously do not hate each other -- they've been together for years and married in the summer of 2015 -- but the morbid words is just their style.

"On my deathbed/all I'll see is you" Know the wedding vow, 'until death do us part?' it's like that -- they will be by each other's side, physically or mentally, upon their deaths.

"Don't try to fight the storm/you'll tumble overboard/tides will bring me back to you" Hannah and Oli will always, every time, end up back with each other. No matter the distance, no matter the fights they endure, they are soulmates and meant to be together. Fate, the universe, whatever, will reunite them.

Their words, not mine. Fun fact: Oli and Hannah have "soulmates" tattooed on the inside of their fingers. When their hands are intertwined and facing up, it spells out the word "soulmates"

Beartooth – I Have a Problem Lyrics 10 years ago
Okay, Caleb says this is the song that made him quit Attack Attack!. Seriously, he wrote this song, and the next day, he up and left.

Toward the end of his time in AA!, Caleb was dealing with a lot of his demons: his ADHD, his depression/anxiety/panic attacks, his body image/eating disorders, and his overall unhappiness with being in the band. To cope, he would drink until he passed out or threw up, whichever came first.

This song, "I Have A Problem" isn't detailing Caleb's problem with alcohol at all. Instead, the "problem" is his involvement with AA! and how he let himself sink so low, and using alcohol just adds fuel to the fire.

It's in this interview https://soundcloud.com/leadsingersyndrome/episode-1-caleb-shomo-beartooth

Fall Out Boy – The Kids Aren't Alright Lyrics 10 years ago
So, seeing these lyrics in 2015, it makes me so happy because they're just so classically Pete. The strange metaphors, twisting words to have different meanings. And wow, this song is honestly one that evokes lots of emotion in me, more than "What a Catch" or "Golden." You can feel the emotion in the song so strongly... wow.

Anyway, on the meaning, I feel that it is about a relationship where the two people have been through everything with one another. I don't really catch a romantic vibe from this, more of a friendship/loyalty one.

Looking at Pete's influences and his friendships, I honestly think this song is about Pete and Patrick's relationship. Not romantic, just the fact they have been through thick and thin with one another, and this is a sort of "congrats, we made it through together" from Pete to Patrick.

Love, Robot – Drive Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about sex that's um... violent? You know the kind.

But Alexa isn't that kind of lyricist. There's a deeper meaning than the obvious physical one. It's about a relationship that's difficult in the sense there are fights and conflicts. They may channel them in the bedroom, but they bleed into their lives and lines are blurred in that way.

Still, it's hard to resist since, to Alexa, being hurt in a sexual way is such a turn on. A bad thing becomes a good thing, even if it's harmful.

(but let's kinkshame Alexa San Roman 2k15)

Twenty One Pilots – We Don't Believe What's on TV Lyrics 10 years ago
Such a lovely song. It's about someone close to Tyler, someone he cares about and would spend the rest of days with, who sticks with him through thick and thin and their feelings about him remain unchanged. Which is where the meaning can be split two ways: about his wife Jenna or his best friend and drummer of the band, Josh.

I personally like to look at it both ways.

"I need to know/that when I fail/you'll still be here" is my favorite line, and it tells the meaning. Sticking with him when he's having his troubles means the world to Tyler.

"We'll make money selling your hair" makes the most sense to me in Josh's context, since he's known for his brightly colored curly hair that is dyed a lot.

In the end, it's a song about friendship forever, and not necessarily romantic. Just a "I love that you're here to share life with me" kind of anthem.

Fall Out Boy – Fame < Infamy Lyrics 10 years ago
In 2015, these lyrics in IoH are so Pete Wentz. He's gotten less risky with his words lately, but listening to this album again, I'm reminded how eloquent he is. I miss it sometimes. Maturity and risk tend to be inversely related.

2007 was the height of Pete Wentz: the emo leader, guyliner, drama king. This song is a narrative of what he feels and what he's experiencing.

"Alright in bed, but better with a pen" -- Pete is quite the writer, and this is him simply saying that, while people swoon over him, his real talent is a writer.

"Too much green to feel blue" -- FOB is making it, and Pete has plenty of money now. They're not struggling like before, so he's "happy" (he's saying that he should be -- whether he was is up for debate)

And the song title "Fame (is less than) Infamy." At this time in his life, Pete was pretty infamous for being dramatic, party boy, and, of course, the dick pic. Still, at the time, he was an attention whore, and didn't really care about what other people thought of him. Still, it's a lot of fame at once, and thus, unhealthy. He's bipolar and had troubles in the past, so it's a commentary on how fast his life is moving.

Another good title for this song is "A Day in the Life of Pete Wentz's Mind"

Yep, just a song about how'd you do anything to be with the one you love, no matter how hard or far, cold or angry, the whole ordeal would be. Cute and simple.

Bring Me the Horizon – Drown Lyrics 10 years ago
I think people are right to say that it's about Oli's struggle with depression and addiction, but it's also about crawling out of it.

"Don't let me drown" is the clearest line, since it's in the tense of a command/request. He's asking someone, anyone, to "save him from himself" and "drag him out alive".

"Cause you know that I can't do this on my own" is another good example of his plea for help: he's in need of someone to help him, save him, from the things that have been holding him back and destroying him, and he's tried to do it all himself before -- it's just never worked out, and now he's asking, begging, for help.

If you're going through a tough time, just know that there is always someone you can talk to. They may not be a savior, but they can be a rock that grounds you. In the end, you're the master of your own fate, but that in no way means you should control it all on your own.

Fall Out Boy – Twin Skeletons Lyrics 10 years ago
One of my favorite FOB songs of all time.

It's hard to point the meaning at any one person, but I think the best guess is Pete's current girlfriend, Meagan. He also posted a picture with him and Gabe Saporta, one of his best friends with the caption, "twin skeletons". Gabe does live in New York, but I'm not sure what can be derived from that. Take it as you will.

Overall, this song is about the devotion of love/commitment to another person and it being returned. I get a sort of "Bonnie and Clyde" vibe from it, especially the line "Keep making trouble 'till you find what you love/I need a new partner in crime and [your shotgun] (that's the real lyric)". Bonnie and Clyde being lovers on the run committing crimes together.

The full title of the song it "Twin Skeleton's (Hotel in NYC)". Notice the apostrophe. It belongs to them. They are together in a wild city (New York), and live there, forever, decaying with one another as they go down with their "sins" and their "trouble" as "partners in crime".

The jet black crow is meant to be a symbol for something constant and pressing, an eternal struggle. It seems to be time, since "on and on" is repeated throughout much of the song and backing vocals.

Tl;dr it's a story of two people who accept their flaws together, as their flaws are what make them who they are. They are skeletons, together for eternity. It's a morbid sort of wedding vow, I think.

Blessthefall – Walk On Water Lyrics 10 years ago
It's interesting... at first, I thought it was about an asshole person who thought of themselves as 'better' than everyone else. Like, holy and that they were God's gift to the world.

The last verse is what trips this up, kind of.
"Son of God, are you listening?
Son of God, can you hear my cry?
We put our faith into you
How could you just watch them die?"
Blessthefall is Roman-Catholic, so their religion can bleed into their music (even though they don't want to be known as a 'Christian band'). This part seems oddly blasphemous, like they're talking about Jesus Christ and how, even thought they put faith in him, he did not answer. Asking like, "where were you? when we prayed for help, and you did nothing? are you even real? or a lie?"

Or, if that's too much of a stretch, they could be talking about said asshole person in a sarcastic context, like: "If you're as holy as you say you are, prove it. Save us and don't leave us." When said person cannot do that, blessthefall says "I knew it, bitch. Stop treating yourself like a god when you're nowhere near sacred"

Two ways to look at it, I guess

Issues – Stingray Affliction Lyrics 10 years ago
The music video describes this song pretty well. It's two guys in a fight club, and the smaller guy is getting his ass kicked. When the bridge starts, he starts to overcome the larger guy, who is acting all cocky and full of it. The small dude wins in the end.

So yeah, it seems like a lyrically complex song but the music video is a great visual aid. "Don't let someone's exterior fool you into thinking they're invincible"

That being said, it might not be the best to prove it at an underground fight club.

Fall Out Boy – Novocaine Lyrics 10 years ago
Like what Emarthepaladin said, it's a cynical commentary on the world. Pete Wentz said somewhere that it's about all that's going on in the world (police brutality, media prevalence, paparazzi, and people not caring about real issues).

"Because they took our love and they filled it up
Filled it up with novocaine and now I'm just numb"

Taking the "love" (the heart, the soul, the emotion that's in actions and what makes us good) and oppressing it/removing it to the point of being numb suggests that, once there's no more soul, nothing more than the actions themselves, we are numbed to things around us.

PVRIS – Eyelids Lyrics 10 years ago
Not sure if this is going to be added, but the end is Lynn's girlfriend-at-the-time, Alexa, talking. "I mean. In what world do I go to sleep after you and wake up before you?! I don’t even know how it happens. Well, I hope you’re having sweet dreams, and you call me when you wake up."

This entire song was written about their relationship and how it's controlled by distance. Lynn's always touring with PVRIS, and Alexa is a photographer for hire who travels a lot as well. As with many things, they have to leave in the morning to go their separate ways of traveling. Sleep takes away time from their being together, so they pull all nighters just to be with each other.

It's sad, honestly, and many people don't understand how hard it is to live with someone you love traveling. As of October 2015, they have (probably) broken up (both of their instagrams were wiped of romantic association with one another, and they haven't interacted much since), probably due to the strain of Lynn's growing popularity and the ever-growing distance they had to endure.
