this song is pretty much a "fuck you" to this boy in her life (presumably a boyfriend) who thinks he's superior in his writing skills ("you think you're smarter than me with all your bad poetry"), and that he needs to teach her ("i know my abc's, yet you keep teaching me") despite the fact that she can already write just fine. she doesn't put up with this though, and even writes the verses of this song in alphabetical order to prove herself. |

TW: RAPE (GRAPHIC) i believe this song to be about rape from a man. "my demons are begging me to open up my mouth i need them, mechanically make the words come out" he's telling her to open her mouth to suck his cock, and that she needs to do this, because it's best for her. "they fight me, vigorous and angry, watch them pounce ignite me, licking up the flames they bring about" when she rejects what the raper says, he forces it onto her. she's angry now because of him ("ignite me"), but it just turns him on, and forces it further. "i sold my soul to a three-piece and he told me i was holy he's got me down on both knees" upon her first encounter with this guy, she thought he was nice because he had a very clean appearance. now it's all gone wrong. "but it's the devil that's tryna hold me down, hold me down sneaking out the back door, make no sound" he's got her, and now he's not letting her go. the rapist is covering her mouth so no one hears her pleas for help. "knock me out, knock me out saying that i want more, this is what i live for" now he's trying to give her drugs, and attempting to convince her that this is what she wants. this is what she lives for. "throw me in the deep end, watch me drown" not only does he find it humane to do this, he takes pleasure in it. "selfish, taking what i want and call it mine i'm helpless, clinging to a little bit of spine" she's fallen into it now, and is starting to take pleasure in it as well. she's starting to take more dominance in the intercourse, but the rapist comes back even stronger. "they rush me, telling me i'm running out of time they shush me (sssh), walking me across a fragile line" the rapist has other things to do, and is fearing getting caught. she's getting loud now, and he's being even more assertive, controlling every action of hers. |

"the young boy wants to move ahead and the old man sings rewind i wonder when in this timeline we'll break to the other side" ↳ tyler's noticed that people just wish to be at some other time in their life, where think things will be/were better. an "other side" we all wish for, but none of us ever seem to get there. "maybe there's a span of time when we feel we're neither nor not wanting to go back again and not wanting to go forth" ↳ this point i believe is referring to the desire for death, which is not going backward nor forward in time. "that point in life must be pretty dark and hopeless, terrifying and if you're asking me when that is" ↳ he's speaking from experience. "it must be tonight" ↳ tyler has realized that point in his life is now. "the old man sits all by himself and thinks of better years when he used to believe in stars and would dream away his fears" ↳ elaborating on the second line of the first verse, tyler may be suggesting that the old man doesn't necessarily have to feel this way. "the young boy moves so fast he doesn't see the stars above and all his dreams are crushed by old men who didn't dream enough" ↳ elaborating on the first line of the first verse, tyler is explaining the problem with this cycle for all generations, perhaps speaking from his own experience. "save me tonight" ↳ tyler ties his thoughts in with his relationship with his God, maybe asking if God can save him from this fate, or from suicide. |

| i think this song, from the perspective of a suicidal person such as tyler, is about finding the person who makes you reconsider your death wish. | |

i believe this song to be about being in a state of depression/mental illness. there's a sort of lostness to the way this song sounds, and i think it goes along well with the lyrics. (this is just my interpretation.) "what are they talking about on the weekends? lost in the forest of this heart is a foreign still" nanna wants to know what normal people do and talk about on their free time. she only finds herself lost in depressing, empty thoughts and moping around. "why are they shaking their heads? we’re stuck in slow life" she wants to know why people don't condone her way of living. it's not like she can control the speed of her life. "is it the beating of the chest that makes us fear the rest?" she wonders if the consciousness of being alive and having one life to live out whatever you want to is what keeps her away from mentally healthy people, as they don't think about this stuff. "we’re slowly sailing away behind closed eyes" sleeping is the only escape she can manage. the "we" refers to the community of mentally ill people. "where not a single ray of light can puncture through the night" she doesn't dream. not anymore. no light getting in may sound miserable, but light is life and life is what she doesn't want to think about. "you caught me in the tide and i caught you" the mentally ill community is what helps her go by. knowing she's not alone saves her, and that does the same for other people. "sheltered by the night red in tooth and red in claw" the night keeps nanna sane, because it's some time to be left alone, maybe in sleep or maybe in search of answers. restless nights can leave her "red in tooth and red in claw." "you saw me in new light and i saw you sheltered by the night red in tooth and red in claw" the mentally ill community recognizes that she's not okay. she's not "just tired." she does the same for others. "between the daylight and the deep sea lies a swarm of silhouettes floating aimlessly" between too much life and none at all, is where nanna's mind lies. her brain feels clogged with abstract thoughts and wishes for deaths. she may even feel like there are different personas telling her things in her mind, but she can never put a name or a face to the voices. "but i’m a mountain i am a killer" though she appreciates the support, she tells others to back off. she has to fight this fight alone, and she feels like she'll end up losing. her mental state is impossible to get through (mountain), even though she realizes she's only doing this to herself (killer). "you’ll get lost and buried deep if you swim with me" she doesn't want anyone else to fall in the same state of mind she's in. "so look at you look at me all because we need to know so look at me look at you all because we’ll never know" but she still wants to be there for her mentally ill friends. she realizes the only reason they've built a friendship is because of their quest for joy. they don't only want happiness, they need it. yet she knows she'll never truly get it. |
