Life is a lot simpler than you're making it out to be. "Take a look inside, what you've lost you'll find." And literally your whole life is about 'searching' for this unattainable je ne sais quoi, to the point that there'd be "nothing left of you" if you realized the truth: that your life is fine the way it is, you don't need that new drug, sexual conquest, or purse. A lot of life is all about trying to get you to chase these thrills that are meaningless, "hands dragging you down" etc. etc. Demons like Corporate America, Hollywood, etc. etc. And you just get sucked in. But not to worry, because it's nothing new. Every other person experiences the same thing. I think a lot of the previous interpretations are extremely influenced by the listeners' personal experiences...rape and abuse, mental illness - all a bit too specific for this song. |
