| If you like this song, you should check out Over the Rhine. Totally the same style. They're not shoegaze at all but very moving, lovely music and mature songwriting. | |
| The Decemberists – Down by the Water Lyrics | 4 months ago |
|
"See this ancient riverbed See where all our follies are led Down by the water and down by the old main drag I was just some towhead teen Feeling 'round for fingers to get in between Down by the water and down by the old main drag" Pretty simple to me. This is about getting drunk down by the river. He's a teen so they have to sneak around. Trying to get "fingers" of booze however he can. Also could be about trying to pick up a girl to give him a handy. Or just trying to get a job to make some money, as the normal work just isn't available like it once was. The rest of the song seems to be about his frustration with trying to "fill his cup" - again, trying to get a job, money, booze, but with the influx of tourists, this makes it more difficult for him. Things are broken, but he would bear it just to have the normal life of the town. Obviously there are things he used to do that he can't do during the summertime. Even the tourists are "rolling" down his usual spots. |

| Cave In – Lost In The Air Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| I've loved this song from the first time I heard it. We all know that the Jupiter album (and Antenna to an extent) was very influenced by Radiohead. To take this further, I've always thought of this song as a sequel of sorts to "Airbag" - just listen to them back to back and you'll hear it.. | |
| Galaxie 500 – Strange Lyrics | 6 years ago |
| @[4003:30999] to me that song captures what it's like growing up in the suburbs, as if everyone just goes to the supermarket to buy a personality, but he's lost. All the normal things people experience aren't quite right when viewed from the perspective of a teenager. He only feels freedom when he "empties a bottle" | |
| Porcupine Tree – Four Chords That Made A Million Lyrics | 6 years ago |

@[ytse:30664]-marmalade yes, it's a pretty obvious answer. but I'm sure Steve has some respect for them as well. I mean, songs don't just take over modern music by accident. Plus hey, Boston did it in 1976 with "More Than a Feeling" |

| Porcupine Tree – Feel So Low Lyrics | 6 years ago |
| Not to take anything away from Steve or the band, which I love, but to me the style of this song is an homage to Jimmy Eat World. Just listen to "Table for Glasses" from Clarity (which was release a year before Lightbulb Sun) and you'll get what I'm saying. Not a rip-off. Just a nod. I'll be perplexed if I'm the only person that heard this connection. | |
| AC/DC – Guns For Hire Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
I first heard this song when this album was first released and didn't quite get all the subtleties.. (as subtle as a jackhammer).. Now, at age 49, it's clear that every line is a double entendre about renting out his package and delivering the goods.. "I'm a smooth operator, a big dic-tator, gonna mark you with my brand.. I got guns for hire, shoot you with desire.." Hehe, never change guys.. |

| Pink Floyd – When the Tigers Broke Free Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| I love the song, but I'm not a fan of where it was placed on side one of the Final Cut. It seems out of place between One of the Few and The Hero's Return. I'd be interested to hear the rationale for that sequencing choice. | |
| Pink Floyd – The Gunner's Dream Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| I can't listen to this song, and I can barely even think about it without tears welling up.. I know sadder, more desolate songs, but the combination of the story and the music and Roger's vocals hit me right in my crying spot. | |

| @[MorganMorgan:26235] this whole album is devastating.. | |

@[GotMeNow:26234] it's hope not.. I feel like he's reaching into a new world with the last two albums.. can't wait to hear where he goes next. |

| Musically this sounds like a lost Uncle Tupelo song.. it's awesome. | |
| The Decemberists – Carolina Low Lyrics | 10 years ago |

To me this song has a Deliverance kind of vibe to it. A teenager from the mountain (high country) comes down to the coast (low country), kidnaps, rapes and kills a smaller boy, maybe a boy that was a tourist or from one of the more wealthy coastal areas. Maybe I'm way off, but this is what I pictured. |

| The Decemberists – Better Not Wake the Baby Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
@[Cyberghost:5890] A few lines I think are different: Kick a hole in the hallway wall Singin' like a painted lady Use your skull like a cannonball But it better not wake the baby And I'm pretty sure he sings: "Pine away for your banner years" I love this song, it's all about hyperbole and how having a sleeping baby can be a very precious thing to new parents. |
