Happy Mondays – Kinky Afro Lyrics 7 years ago
@[locaxdave:26882] Yes , you are absolutely right. About how the title come about, and the listening to Hot Chocolate hits influence. I’ve realised Shaun Ryder is jus a slightly older than me. And his musical influences are much more influenced by 60’s early 70’s music than people thought. After reading his book. It’s clear he ‘knows’ music inside and out. And comin from the Manchester area. (Though he claims he’s more from Salford I think) he couldn’t avoid not having fantastic music taste and knowledge. As that area has been a hotbed of producing major music for decades. And rarely gets the respect for it.
When Shaun Ryder met the 60’s singer Donavan’s daughter, Oriel. And then went on to live with her and have a baby with her. He already knew all of Donovan’s music completely. Is Donovan from the North? Maybe.
The Happy Monday’s music is the iconic music of the era 1988 to early 1990’s. It doesn’t get airplay at all anymore. And You have to wonder why.
People who claim to know music from the era, and don’t know The Happy Monday’s, Or even The Farm or The Charlatans, DONT know the musical era at all, from my view.

@[FilthyMcNasty:26881] Only part of the song is about his dad. The rest is about Shaun becoming a parent. He pretty much knew his shortcomings as a parent early in life. Though the mother of his first child, Trish, Shaun Ryder has a lot of respect for. As she was always a good mother. And has made a successful life for herself now in America. I only know cause I’ve read Shaun Ryder’s biographies, books. Shaun Ryder was not happy with his father hanging around constantly during The Happy Monday’s success. He wanted him to F - off.

Happy Mondays – Kinky Afro Lyrics 7 years ago
And Shaun Ryder set out very clearly the real reason in his book, why The Happy Monday’s final album failed. Cause of a stupid decision by Factory Records, FAC 51.
Caused they insisted on bringing in Talking heads to influence completely the production of that final album. Shaun Ryder protested loudly to this endlessly. Cause he knew they were not even nearly the right people. He wanted to stick with paul /Phil? Oakenfield. Cause it was the Oakenfield sound that made The Happy Monday’s unique sound.
But no, the rest of the band went with Factory Records insistence. Shaun left the studio and went and took tons of drugs. He participated but not much. And the album unsurprisingly failed. And The Happy Monday’s ended as a band. Anyone with half a brain at the time would have known, Taking Heads were an old sound by 1989- 1990. Talking Heads didn’t even get why Bez was in the band. And sought to have him removed. He made the F..king band. The rest of the Happy Monday’s spend a lot of time blaming Shaun Ryder’s drug problem for the demise of The Happy Monday’s. No! It was their stupid decision to have Talking Heads involved in the production of their music. Oh and Talking Heads charged Factory Records a fortune for doing it/being involved. Which sent Factory Records broke. They deserved goin broke.

@[shlep:26878] Yes, huw1085121. It’s a bit of a shame Shaun Ryder used the expression Sack on Me. Cause it was a global hit song. And no one got that part. All the same, the song is musical genius. And I firmly believe Nirvana nicked a big part of The Happy Monday’s sound. The time line for nicking fits. Overall, The whole ‘so called “ Madchester” musical movement is underrated or not well documented. It was majorly important. And seems only people who were young -youngish in that era know that. Shaun Ryder deserves his place in rock royalty. But cause he’s from the north he’s not receiving it. And that’s wrong.

Love how this song builds and builds . And the harmonising. I could listen to it over and over.

All Saints – Pure Shores Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is dreamy. And was the theme song to the Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Beach. All Saints were really really good. I wish they have made more music together. They were originally just a bunch of girls who sang in their rooms after school. And all saints was a road one of them lived on. 1 of them married loony but unbelievably cool Liam Gallagher from Oasis.. the movie The Beach was based on a true story.

Heart – Magic Man Lyrics 8 years ago
1 more thing. The lyrics to this song express exactly what it is like for a young girl to crazy in love with a guy. Who may not be in her best interests to be in love with. But impossible to tear yourself away from. We've all been there, us women, at some stage. The good thing is, these relationships are usually based almost solely on sexual attraction. And burn out before your father threatens to, let's say, eliminate The Magic Man.

Heart – Magic Man Lyrics 8 years ago
A quick trip to Wikipedia or the Rolling Stome interview quickly establishes the fact that this song is about the vocalist's affair with an older guy in her band. And nuts who hav convinced themselves the song has links to Charles Manson are insane. My suggestion, if u are trying to link him to anything then you may reflect that u are attracted to some negative Sh..t. The sinister nature of what we know Mason did needs no more embellishment. He hung around L.A for a long time. A drifter and a crook. He gravitated towards actors/actresses, accessing expensive locales. Looking for fame. So plenty of famous people at least met the maggot once.Even Michael Caine ,as stated in 1 of his autobiographies stated he had the unfortunate experience of meeting Manson in California. And immediately knew he was a dangerous psychopath.
I knew The Magic man was about a real love affair when I 1st heard it in 76 or 77. It's so obvious. I noticed a while back the song was used in Sofia Coppola's movie The Virgin Suicides. The song was perfect for that movie, so spot on, and depicts the 1970's really authentically . And in that movie josh Hartnett enters the scene when magic man is played. Great film moment.

Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline Lyrics 8 years ago
My mother and her sister used to play this brilliant song all the time in the 70's. Was pleasantly surprised when reading a biography of Grace Kelly, that she chose this song for her daughter Princess Caroline's entrance to Caroline's 21st Party/ball. It was a big event in Monaco in the 70's. And princess Caroline's clothes and hair there are 1970's fashion at its best. Love it.

J.J. Cale – After Midnight Lyrics 8 years ago
If you just discovered this song. Consider yourself lucky. It's pretty old. But soooo good. Only JJ Cale does this song as sexy as this. Do you have to be stoned to get into it. Or with your honey late at night when listening to it. No. But it sure makes it even better. I have always thought this song is based around the 1960's and 1970's practice of hippies sitting around cross legged. Passin the pipe, drinkin, chatting around concepts .An listening to music late into the night. Is this song based on those free love values of that era. I think so. And it's also about not givin a Sh..t about infidelity.

Bob Seger – Night Moves Lyrics 8 years ago
I have a love/hate relationship with this wonderful song. Like everyone here who grew up in the 1980's. The minute you hear the intro to this song ..you are suddenly thrown back into the early 1980's. Night time, drivin around in old cars. And like the songwriter, you become hopelessly nostalgic about your lost youth. And the crazy sh.t we did back then. The fun, and high school friends. Sometimes ..if this song comes on the radio in the car I have to switch it off because it makes me tearful. It bring back far too many memories. And What happened to our young life? The young people we used to know. I grew up partly rural. I guess I totally get this song. And Even tho Bob Seger is describing the loss of his youth in the early 1960's. The lyrics apply to anyone who has passed thru youth into middle age. This song forces you to reflect. Lastly, the back singers on this song nail it.

Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights Lyrics 8 years ago
I was a early teen when I caught sight of Kate on TV leaping around on an English hillside singing this. I hadn't read Wuthering Heights yet. And I firmly believe that u have to had read and understood the novel to 'get' this song. For the most part. And even better, know about the lifestyle of the Victorian doomed English novelist, Emily Bronte who wrote it. And her weird arse, isolated, eccentric , tragic family. They were so odd they were fantastic. And hugely talented. Emily Bronte wrote that novel, which has themes of sex, mental illness, class division, money power. And domestic violence. Without Emily ever having even 1 boyfriend. And was dead at 30. Kate Bush's song captures the yearning of Cathy as a ghost. And Heathcliff, as the bit of a sociopath he was. How on earth did Kate Bush write this song at 19 ? I also find her bit later song 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' deeply haunting too.

Dusty Springfield – Son Of A Preacher Man Lyrics 8 years ago
This has gotta be the sexiest song from the late 1960's ever. The whole scene she's describing. It's the only song that Makes me want to be a 16 year old girl again. Cause let's face it, when your 16, it's always about looks. And if he's hot.. but jus happens to be a preachers son, and he's very interested. It's game on. The southern country lilt to this song and how it was recorded in the South makes it so authentic. Written originally for Aretha Franklin, whose daddy incidentally really was a Preacher man.. makes it a southern anthem. Dusty Springfield's other song Breakfast In Bed is just as good. And yep, sexy. With the whole brass thing happening. The entire Dusty In Memphis album is gold quality musicianship.

Longpigs – She Said Lyrics 8 years ago
And another thing. The Longpigs were kinda screwed over by Elektra Records right in the middle of everything. And Crispin Hunt lead singer was in a coma for 3 months due to a car accident. (Was he high or drunk?) They didn't have as much bad luck as the UK band The Charlatans (not the U.S the Charlatans) but close. I'm surprised U2's record label didn't succeed in rescuing this amazingly talented band.

Longpigs – She Said Lyrics 8 years ago
The only reason this song is not commented on is that in The U.K at the time there was an overabundance of talented bands that started with The Stone Roses, Happy Monday's etc. and developed into what's known as Britpop of the 1990's. The Longpigs without doubt had it all. Except enuf airplay An money behind their P.R... London radio was only jus then getting its own indie FM radio station. XFM (a former pirate radio station) but Too little too late. Crazy but true. The perfect screaming of Longpigs lead singer Crispen (can u get anymore of a middle class English name than that) An good looks should have catapulted him into stardom. God this guy can sing. This song in my opinion defines the britpop era wen I hear it. As do Oasis songs. I think this song is about identity. And girlfriends who are jus happy to be ornaments. Rather than have a real identity of their own. The continued success-failure of brilliant bands like the Longpigs and Shed 7's song, She Left me On Friday....Was caused by lack of a indie FM stations early on.

Wings – Live and Let Die Lyrics 8 years ago
Paul McCartney said that his wife used to say Live and let die. They had a very successful marriage. Which is rare for rockstars. And he only married once. I think Paul McCartney was in his element when he was asked to write a song for that James Bond film. The pics of him working with the orchestra are really good . I swear Paul McCartney is a musical genius. And he can't even read music. We didn't realise it at the time. But era of the James Bond film this epic song was written for.. was stylistically cool in a 70's way. All round ,Wings . ..The band that McCartney created after the Beatles ..and was against all the odds , very successful. Who in the hell puts their Missus in their band. And succeeds at it. McCartney. Of course.I think his 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is the most beautiful love song ever written. And he wrote it about how Linda his wife stuck by him thru the demise of the Beatles and everything . Jus when u think You know every gem of a song by Wings you discover another.

Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics 8 years ago
Sorry but all women will 'ask for the truth but never believe you'. That's why it's so stupid when we have it out with or confront husbands and boyfriends. Nothing you say will convince us you are NOT cheating. I don't even know why us women go thru with the argument. It never consoles us. Or convinces us. We just storm off. Smugly satisfied or disturbed that WE KNOW you are lying. And we jus develop more plans to extract the truth. Or catch you out.

Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics 8 years ago
Yes. I read an interview of Billy Joel. This song is about his first wife Elizabeth Weber. He said she was in the room when he wrote it. And he said it's for you. Her reply was 'can I have the publishing rights then?' Which he unfortunately agreed to. What an oppotunistic goldigger she was. He said in the interview that being married to her was like being married into The Borgias. He stated that her and her brother had their eyes on gettin as much rights over his music and money that they could lay their hands on. And he deeply regretted his relationship with her. She fleeced him. He describes all her selfish traits in the lyrics. As a young man billy joel had no idea that a lot of these traits were red flag signs of a sociopath. You can listen to the lyrics and recognise normal female behaviours. But there are some lines that suggest that this girl doesn't really care that much about him. Perhaps he knew back then but didn't want to face it. Girls can be very ignorant of male needs at times. Especially when they are very pretty. And sexually confident. Tho Elizabeth Weber was far from pretty. But smart. About money.

The Babys – Isn't It Time Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm a bit of a nerd when it come to this song. The song writer of this song 'Isn't It Time' wrote it when he was in France on business. And he met and fell in love with a French girl. And he made the decision to finally commit. Rather than remain single. All the emotion, doubt and anxiety about committing is in this song. And the choir speak the girlfriend's part. It has the prettiest piano you will ever hear in a late 1970's song too. It came out the same time as Baby It's You. By Promises. They are very similar. But Isn't It Time is way better. Unfortunately The Baby's type of music was just startin to go out of fashion by the time Isn't It Time was released. Had they released it in early 1970's they would have had enduring success.

The Babys – Isn't It Time Lyrics 8 years ago
@[kurt590019:23761] Glad u noticed just how good the choir is in this magnificent song. The story is... they needed a choir desperately As back up vocals. And they were extremely lucky to get the best choir available in the U.S at the time by sheer luck. As the choir that sings on this song we're in very high demand at the time. Cause they were just so good. And it shows. Those chicks nail it. And Isn't it Time would have been nothing without them. The Baby's managed to get them cause there was a small gap in the choir's itinerary. I was about 14 when I first heard this song come on the TV. I came running from my bedroom to see who the hell they were. Cause they were so good. Was this song ever released in the U.K.? I swear I never heard it once there in 12 years on UK radio. If not, they missed a gem.

Happy Mondays – Step On Lyrics 8 years ago
The line 'call the cops' was put in by Shaun Ryder, who wrote slightly different lyrics to the original song and was lead singer of The Happy Monday's. He put in 'call the cops' cause there was real young kid who was always at The Hacienda Club in Manchester in the early days. Always completely off his head on ecstasy and was always shouting 'call the cops' Shaun Ryder and his friends thought it was hilarious. So as Shaun Ryder stated in his autobiography, he put it in ,in remembrance of that. I love Step On. It's a song that defined the UK late 80's and early 90's generation. I'd say Many Americans missed out on it cause Shaun Ryder had no end of visa issues gettin to tour the U.S cause he got done for drug importation from Amsterdam to the UK in the early days. Sorry but that's F...ken cool as in itself.

Happy Mondays – Tart Tart Lyrics 8 years ago
@[FilthyMcNasty:23755] And that Hamnett producer guy died at 41. From drugs .Shaun Ryder said it was such a loss cause he was absolutely brilliant. U gotta consider the fact at the end of the day, the demise of the happy Mondays was, The loss of that producer, and the dumb move by FactoryRecords to insist on bringing in Talking Heads Tina Weymouth and that other talking Heads fella to 'produce' ..work on the Happy Mondays final album 'Yes Please'. Instead of the magician, Paul oakenfield. Who they had endless success with. Shaun Ryder was furious about it. And against it. As he knew an tried to tell the rest of the band that Tina Weymouth was the wrong person on every level to be the drive behind Yes Please. But no, they refused to listen and Yes Please bombed. Talking Heads was, no offence, way out dated by early 90's. They didn't even know about or understand the Madchester music scene. And thought Bez was irrelevant An should be removed from the Happy Monday's WTF !! That jus shows you how much Tina Weymouth didn't get it. Shaun Ryder is not at fault for the demise of The Happy Monday's at all. The rest of the band screwed it with dumb decisions. Shaun lead singer, was always outvoted.

Happy Mondays – Tart Tart Lyrics 8 years ago
No, hav to say, Shaun Ryder has stated Tart Tart was the nick name they gave a local female drug dealer who was quite a bit older than them in the early days. She died suddenly. And that's why Ryder dedicated the title of this song to her. And some of the lyrics refer to her. Shaun Ryder really liked her as a person.

Happy Mondays – Kinky Afro Lyrics 8 years ago
Agree with everyone here . This was/ is a great song. How many babies are born each year with fathers that could say the line in all honesty, 'son I'm 30 I only went with ya mother cause she's dirty'. I've read Shaun Ryder's autobiography. He's dead honest. And hates liars, pretenders. And he's seen all the b.s in the music industry. His brother, former Happy Monday's band member, has mentioned he thought Shaun wrote this line as a dig at him cause he became a parent real young. But no it isn't true. Shaun suggests in his book it's more about himself. Even though he was 28 wen he became a dad. Also from reading about him I've finally discovered 'sack on me' is a Manchester expression for ' giving up'' or ending something. That's makes the lyrics of this song make perfect sense. Sack on me cause I'm a loser who doesn't care ??? Maybe.

Happy Mondays – God's Cop Lyrics 8 years ago
Nope. You are all jus slightly wrong. Jus read Shaun Ryder's biography. He states in it that everybody thinks the song lyrics are about that chief constable in Manchester. And he admits they are abit ! . Tho he , Shaun maintains that it's about how he was always speaking to God when he got in his worst scariest scrapes back then. He's actually Catholic/Irish background. An Let's face it, Shaun Ryder was involved in some scary stuff at times. Back then high on heroin and ecstasy. The period of time he lived in Amsterdam in early Happy Monday's period was part of his, say, criminal period. It's an eye opener.

As this song has been claimed by Gordon lightfoot himself as being about his mistress Cathy Smith. It makes me wonder. After seeing a pic of her in her 30's maybe, she was not good looking. Embrace (UK) – All You Good Good People Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is amazing. Why Embrace did not get the success level of The Verve or Oasis is a 1990's mystery. They were prodigiously talented musically, and what is obvious from this song they wrote intelligent meaningful songs. If u kick back and really listen to it, you are listening to an orchestra , not a band. They could actually play instruments well . I believe they were music students from the country. I lived in London when this song crept, not crashed onto the music scene. Embrace never got the recognition they well deserved. I always found the lyric all you good good people very public spirited. I liked them cause they weren't arrogant like Blur or Oasis. And agree they were like The Verve.

Bee Gees – Lonely Days Lyrics 10 years ago
This would have to be sexiest song out. Have an impression that they wrote it about missing girlfriends/wives when they were on the road touring. And its clear they toured a lot. Apparently they wrote this song directly after reforming in 1970. And they wrote it 10 minutes. How on earth do you do that. Well, being a Gibb certainly helps. Love this song to death.
