During the 1980's it was common for Community Groups to organize bowling teams of trouble youth and the intellectually disabled. Camper Van is probably relating skinheads to both. It was believed that troubled people had little access to good influence, a decent friends network and lived daily with derelict parents and families. Bowling was quite popular at the time and it was easy to reserve lanes for groups and organizations. What I'm trying to figure out is what Jah (John) has to do with clocks.... or if 'sleeping next to plastic' is a metaphor? |

| More on the Serbian quote - If one's life loses 'immersion' in later years we do often look back to the those days when we lived chaotically and carefree with no concerns to deeper sciences. Those days felt much less secure but, in trade, they felt much more real. I can easily see where Bowie is using the term 'Selling the world' like we here in Zealand use 'lost or thrown away the plot.' ( can't blame us the plot DOES suck) XD | |

XD I was also thinking that perhaps Bowie was musing that the world we're in IS "Heaven", we're all dead and the man he met in passing was the world's creator/promoter promising (selling) eternal life back in the day when they truly were alive. | |

My take is an old couple ; the wife is beginning to pass away. The lyrics are reference to metaphysical conspiracy/philosophy involving the concept of the Cartesian Theater ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_theater ). The couple are noticing something creaking around them in their home and realize it is more than just old floorboards. There's something in the same room with them beyond their visual capabilities. The husband is crying for his wife to not pass onto that other side and leave him alone in their home. The husband also seems to suspect who the "ghost" is that is haunting him and his wife ( "Tell her that I miss our 'Little Talks'" ) . Also I'm pretty sure one line of lyrics is the wife crying for her husband to just let her pass on stating "just let me go and meet Gadzoo" and not "just let me go; we'll meet again soon." The bit about 'Truth' is perhaps reference to those in the external dimension burying the discoveries of the Cartesian Theater the husband and wife have left behind. |
