Jackson C. Frank – My Name Is Carnival Lyrics 5 years ago
These lyrics are very dark and very abstract. I think the key to understanding these lyrics is to understand what is meant by carnival. His name is carnival. Is carnival an anthropomorphism? No, because his name is carnival. It is the opposite of anthropomorphism. The antonym of anthropomorphism is dehumanization. The "protagonist", so to speak, has become dehumanized by his experiences in life and his relations with others. The fat woman, the high wire, the sad clowns, the arcade's penny claw are all symbols of the draining of his soul and his constant despair. His life has become a carnival and that is who he has become. These are very sad and depressing lyrics, masterfully presented. This is a great song.

Bob Dylan – My Back Pages Lyrics 10 years ago
I just want to point out the double entendre in the line:

"My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow"

Dylan could have used for and aft, but he chose stern and bow. Stern could also mean firm, harsh rigorous or grim and bow might be something someone more humble and respectful, or someone on a stage might do. Or it could refer to back to front or past to present. Maybe Dylan didn't even know what the poem was about when he wrote it, or maybe he had a more limited view of the panorama of the lyric's meanings. Maybe those giants he was slaying were just windmills.

Much of the imagery in My Back Pages is too complex for me to put together and understand. My feeling, though, is that with maturity, things that once seemed cut and dried are not so neatly divided. A deeper understanding blurs the edges of what is right, what is wrong and why things develop as they do.

I am trying to imagine what Dylan was feeling when he wrote, I hesitate to say "these lyrics", as they are more poetry than lyrics. This kind of writing takes all the energy of the writer to produce and is felt throughout the entire body as the words are squeezed out. It is physically and mentally draining to write something like this. It takes more energy to write something like this than I ever had, even in my youth. It is pure genius that can confuse even a pure genius.

I always loved this song, but I never felt that I understood the entire meaning of it.
