@[PeterCS:5637] it makes me sad that this comment is so poorly rated, and that a pathetic clueless stream of consciousness schlock (and completely lacking in real social consciousness) is occupying 'best rated'.

It's sort of painfully obvious that the song is about a poor person with few material resources desperately trying to fit into some fancy partygoing crowd (Warhol's Factory is an obvious example, whether it really was written about them or not) but who is constantly confronted by the sad fact that she can never keep up, in terms of fashion trends, having new expensive gowns at each event, etc. The song explores her sadness and alienation at others' contempt of her for her being at a lower socioeconomic level than them, and explores the sad fact that even though she will try and try, she will never quite make it because the decks are stacked against her and the rampant narcissism and soullessness of the privileged set will be only too happy to step on her & her desire to 'climb above her station' for their own amusement.
