| Mother Mother – Calm Me Down Lyrics | 10 years ago |

My first reaction was just, it's about sex, and sex with irony because calming down means sexual excitement. But later I saw it in a different light and completely fell in love with the song. To me it's not just about sex, it's about someone who has obscure sexual desires and maybe even a troubled past. There's this wild and suppressed side to him begging to be let out so much that it makes him anxious, and he has to be calmed down by this special person in this specific way. I mean why not? Have you even known of a person whose worries could only be calmed down by kisses and attention from a loved one? And it's through this intimate act with this person, that he finds release, not just physically, but on a spiritual level right down to his soul. To me these particular lines are most interesting... "All my life I hurt myself and cut myself Put myself through living hell All so I could feel what I felt" When you took me in Absolve my sins Is this person talking about hurting themselves for their own sexual pleasure? It would seem so, as that's also what they ask of the person they're singing to. But in those last three lines it takes a turn, saying that they went through this in the past for what they have now. This makes me think perhaps they were hurt by others or their environment or perhaps something in their head. It could even be something like anxiety, alienation, or guilt for their desires. Until of course they met this person who absolves their sins through this intimate act be they physical sins or the sin of desire. And then there's the wording used towards the person the singer is addressing. This is what makes me feel that the bond between these two people is particularly important. Speaking over and over of the beauty of this person's body and the healing effect is has, and also little phrases like "happily married" and asking her to hold his head in her hands. That he wants to be a sweet son and doesn't want to fight, is not only kinky language but also shows he wants a good relationship with this person. The combination of sexual intimacy and intimacy of the soul is what makes this song so intriguing to me. To be a special someone who is the key to releasing another someone's anxieties and fulfilling their fantasies, well that's certainly a relationship I'd love to have. |
