This doesn't line up with the artist's stated meaning of the song, but this is my interpretation of the song and music. I take it as a conversation / narration of soldiers marching overnight to an important battle. They have to believe that they will be victorious and are singing and telling stories to cheer each other up. (Everything is looking up, everybody up now). They are keeping the mood light (Howling at the moon with friends, jumping so high to touch the clouds) and already looking forward to how life will be once the battle is over (possibilities / no limits just epiphanies). However, they still must deal with the reality of their situation. (I hear it calling, I feel it in my soul). They have a duty to themselves, to each other, and to their nation to do their best and feel that calling to service. By cheering themselves up, encouraging each other, and by "losing control" they are preparing to go unhindered and ready to do whatever it takes to succeed. They are 100% dedicated and have no second thoughts (Never gonna look back, never gonna give it up, don't wake me now.) This all didn't click to me until I noticed the military style drums in a few sections of the song, along with the "two, three, four" that is counted off in the background right after the first section. |
