Ben Howard – The Fear Lyrics 5 years ago
Fantastic song. The meaning I think it's pretty explicit..

"I've been worrying that were all living our lives in the confines of fear"

Fear to leave your job and start a venture. Fear to leave a relationship that's not right. Fear to follow your dream.

But Ben speaks of a desire and drive to reach our full potential:

"I will become what I deserve"

The beauty of this song is it speaks plainly, and is written with a driving tempo that leaves the listener with a sense of determination. Couldn't be performed any other way.

Bob Dylan – Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) Lyrics 8 years ago
I think the song is told from the perspective of a veteran after a war. Probably something conscript like Vietnam. Lots of veterans returned to the US finding it difficult to adjust back to normal life, became homeless, fell into drugs etc.

He's having flash backs of his life before... with 'her', trying to pickup where he left off. Can you tell me who to contact here, senor? But no answers.

But he also felt like he had a purpose. They went to war. What happened? Where are we heading, lincon county road or Armageddon?

The final line I think he's in hospital and wants out. Let's overturn these tables, disconnect these cables. Senor is probably a doctor. Whole song could be his trip on drugs, with little moments of memories and questions, lost in the confusion of it all.

Portishead – Roads Lyrics 10 years ago
Great songs stand the test of time.

Road's is one of those songs that will continue to be relevant and connect with people.

I believe the song is from the perspective of someone who feels isolated.

The first lines set the tone:

'Can't anybody see?, we have a war to fight'

There are plenty of isolated people who feel there is a war to fight.

Think about women in abusive relationships, fgm, someone coming out about there sexuality, people who struggle with depression.

Some of these people come forward with there problems. But the story I always hear is they still feel isolated. They feel no one is on their side. 'Surely that ain't right?'

Often these issues are not discussed. Stigmatised. The authorities don't want to deal with it. Society sweeps it under the carpet.

This is why roads will continue to be relevant. Its non specific. So it identifies with a whole range of people struggling with present day issues that are simply not addressed by society.
