I adore this song. I agree with some of the comments though that this song is not just a simple celebration. there is something much more than a tinge of sadness that undercuts the lyrics. Why does he have to "bring himself" - in the last stanza - he has to bring himself to "write - that I give my best to Springville Hill"? and that this will happen in the twilight of his life? ie "Years from now when this old light isn't ambling anymore". it is almost like the narrator is actually trapped in Springville Hill - all looks peaceful and bucolic on the surface but there is something deeper, more ancient and more malignant underneath the surface. |

i think it is a song about helplessness. probably helplessness within a relationship context and right towards the end, he sees the unsatisfying outcome of his attempt to shift the power. it doesn't make anything better "Guess it's better to turn this - So I won so you lose"....the resignation of these lyrics summarises the whole story. |

Lyric correction - But in order to root out the cancer it's got to be cut from the site.
agreed that this song is about social division. i like the Donald Trump reference and the goal of conservatives in government. |

A loyal companion sick of his motives being questioned? And i always thought it was "there were times when i loathed your name"....which makes more sense for me. |

Like anything complex this song is not just about "love" or an "older woman younger man affair" or "Lord of the Rings"...these are all unilateral interpretations that are all completely valid in their own way. This song is about love, power, corruption, revenge and bitter liberation. The journey of the ingenue who trusts completely and has utmost faith in the power of the "teacher" and who eventually comes to realise that the "teacher's" motivations were not as pure as first thought, nor was their knowledge as omniscient. The triumphant last verse identifies the "student" finally coming to this realisation and being able to wrest back control...but this is not necessarily a victory, as with this comes the emptiness and loneliness of losing the hopes and ideals that were constructed around the "teacher". Think of the Wizard of Oz, as an analogy. And then paint that image 6 shades blacker. |
