James Blunt – Goodbye My Lover Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is much simpler than some of the meanings being ascribed to it. It's about the end of a long relationship, where the person meant everything to him and he thought he would be with her forever. They told each other their secrets and were together so long they seemed as one.

The seemingly ambiguous parts of the song are just about the conflicting feelings at the end of a relationship of this length. When you're breaking up with the person that you told everything to, it's hard to believe that one day in the future you might not come back together and share everything about it with each other. In a way, you're going through the breakup together, but separate, and it's very difficult to accept, that you're both going through the same thing but can't share it with each other.

Just my interpretation based on listening to it and watching his face in the live version of it on youtube. It's an amazing song, but totally heartbreaking to listen to when you're going through what he was.

Florence + the Machine – Various Storms & Saints Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a very meaningful song about the process of breaking it off with someone (someone that she was too dependent on) and how hard and tumultuous the process is.

She's in the process of working through a broken relationship (you took your toll on me, so I gave myself over willingly).

The relationship has ended and she's not sure how to go on (people just untie themselves, uncurling lifelines). She's not sure how to separate her identity and life from his.

She searches for meaning in this struggle ("sing it out loud, who made us this way") because she's having such a hard time breaking free.

She's hurt, and she's bleeding. But she's telling herself that if she hangs in there, she'll be ok and find meaning in life again. She had to have this man and she's going to feel the consequences for a long time, but she's hoping that ultimately she'll be ok.

Florence + the Machine – How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree with Toonlink13 about the meaning. I think the end of the song is either her looking back on the "rejoining" that the rest of the song talks about - or possibly that it was all just wishful thinking and she's letting go of the man she loved, finally.

Either way, I think it just means it didn't work out, and she's waited a long time for him to wake up, to her love, to life, to what's going wrong, or to whatever, and she can't wait anymore and now she feels herself opening to life's possibilities on her own (pure speculation).

As for the first stanza, I think it's referring to the two lovers deciding to get back together even though they know it will end in pain.

I really identify with this music and I feel like I relate to relationships in a similar way to Florence. This piece in particular in very beautiful and joyful, but at the same time bittersweet. The work is a great accomplishment.
