@[Thursdaylove:5440] Wow ,, I just finished leaving a comment about my thinking of someone getting out of prison or a mental institution when I hear those lines, "Son, grab your things...."

@[keydoor:5439] Maybe stop and think again. Being a part of the band when things were going badly and he was also worried about his pregnant wife was as traumatic and chaotic as being in an army. His attempts to gain perspective and decide 'which connections I should cut' were as life-affecting as coming home from Viet Nam would be to someone who fought there. "[I]t's just about leaving a band" doesn't seem to take into account the depth and breadth of that decision. I feel it's "deeper" than you seem to be giving it credit for. Just another opinion...

@[thedouglas:5438] Re your last paragraph: Right! I feel this too, and you've expressed it quite well.

@[we_r_the_red_hots:5437] "...so what do I know," asks a thirteen-year-old. Wow! I think this youngster knows a great deal more than the average 13-year-old. Perhaps he or she has a future in reading the cards. Personally, I read the lyric as though it were the written description of a dream. It is powerful, wonderful, visionary, uplifting; genius!

@[LoganNYC:5435] I've probably wondered more about that line, or should I say those lines ("son, grab your things, I've come to take you home" and "Hey, you can keep my things, they've come to take me home") than anything else. While I'm sure this isn't what PG meant, the words suggest someone being released from some institution (jail, nut-house) and having someone come to pick him up. I cannot easily meld that notion into the rest of the song .. so I continue to ponder those lines in particular.

@[Tuesdayz_gone:5433] I find it hard to believe that someone could say "I love the song," and in the same paragraph ask "is this song just random words and phrases that somewhat fit together." I do not feel the words and phrases just happen to fit together; the song is genius, although as nebulous as a dream. And like a dream, some of the words and phrases have meanings to the composer that we cannot nail down. Yet they touch something in us that responds, as our own life experience rises up to color them and make them mean something to each of us. If it isn't yet clear: I love the song.
