This song is clearly about two men (or boys). As a gay thirteen year old male I can relate to this, so can a lot of people. "We lay on the bed there Kissing just for practice Could we please be objective?" Pretty obvious what this means, the two boys are making out on their bed, but they agreed it was just either for practice or experimentation. But one of the boys realizes that his feelings are true, and wants it to be more than just 'practice' or experimentation. He wants to make it official. "A hand over my mouth A hand over the window" They're both clearly keeping this a secret. He's keeping his mouth shut, and a hand over the window usually refers to keeping things secret, of covering up the truth; not letting people see what is really happening. "Well, if I remain passive and you just want to cuddle Then we should be ok, and we won't get into trouble Cause we're seeing other people At least that's what we say we are doing" He's saying that if they remain a secret (passive) then it will be alright, because they won't get into trouble. Usually, when stuff like this hits the fan, things get incredibly messy with their friends and family, it gets in the way of a lot of things. "Cause we're seeing other people, at least that's what we say we are doing" A lot of times, gay people will try to cover up being interested in the same sex, so they will try to get a member of the opposite sex to date to take away the suspicion. "How are you feeling? I don't think you can be dealing With the situation very well" The other boy (boy A) is struggling with coming to terms with his sexuality, which can lead to several things. "You take a lover for a dirty weekend, that's ok But when it's over You are looking at the working week in the eyes of a gigolo" Boy A is sleeping with women, trying to sort out his feelings. Boy B, the one who has already figured out his feelings, is feeling as if he is a gigolo, someone being paid or supported to be someone's escort. In this case, maybe instead of being paid or supported, he's being made a puppet to settle the Boy A's feelings. "You're kissing your elbow You're kissing your reflection" Muscular guys usually do this when they're proud of their body, usually jocks and athletes. Boy A has a reputation to keep, so coming out would be disastrous. "And you can't understand why all the other boys are going for the New, tall, elegant rich kids I'll admit it is a bitch, kid" I'm not entirely sure what this part means, but here is my interpretation. Possibly, the boys who are already out, or maybe not out, and even just straight aren't showing feelings for Boy A (the jock). I mean, why try when you think there's not a chance, and it could ruin your social life? "But if they don't see the quality then it is apparent that You're going to have to change Or you're going to have to go with girls You might be better off At least they know what they're doing" The "quality," being orientation, and "change" meaning "come out," this part of the song is Boy B telling Boy A to hurry up and figure out what he feels or he needs to just stop trying and stay with girls, because this isn't working out. Then, he proceeds to tell Boy A that the other kids know what they're doing, meaning they know what their feelings mean already. This happens way too often. If you've ever seen a gay film (not porn) about two young teenagers or kids then this song will make more sense to you if it doesn't already. I have personally experienced this first hand, so this song is incredibly clear to me. |
