So I've seen some people on here trying to just shut down anyone's interpretation, that's sad. You can interpret music however you want. Here's mine simply just based off how this song makes me feel every time I hear it: So, it reminds me of a short relationship I had with a long time friend of mine. We were close friends for 13 years. I was always in to her, but never knew how she felt about me. My "lazy eye" would always be fixed on her, looking at her and adoring her from a far and not being obvious about it. Finally, we were both single at the same time and I took a shot, I asked her out and she said YES. I was ecstatic. But, everyone around me kept telling me "be careful, you don't wanna lose the friendship". I wasn't expecting that. "I've been waiting for this moment, all my life" I finally got my chance with her "but it's not quite right" I had no idea everyone would be so unsure about us. So we went on a few dates, and, it was time to "get down to business" for lack of a better term. When we were in the bedroom, it started out normal, we were watching TV. And neither of us said anything for a bit "I've been waiting for the silence all night long, just a matter of time" I knew when things got silent, we would both be thinking the same thing. "To appear sad. With the same old decent lazy eye, fixed to rest on you" I wasn't used to not admiring her from afar, She thought I wasn't interested. I remember thinking why couldn't this be like the movies where "Everyone's so intimately rearranged" and "Everyone's so focused clearly, with such shine" (I didn't think those lyrics but the lyrics remind me of what I was thinking lol). Finally, I initiated it "locked and loaded". "Still the same old decent lazy eye. straight through your gaze" But I was still not looking at her fully, until she pulled me closer. So everything locked in, all my uncertainty was gone, we were one, intimate and perfect "we relate, it's so fun to relate". It was perfect. And everything around us was perfect. Everything "the room, the sun and the sky"..Everything. Thanks for reading my story. Music is interpreted by the individual, don't let anyone tell you how you should think about a song. |

Mostly everyone here has made many valid points, I agree with you all but I'd like to add my tweaks. It's definitely an anti-war song, that's easy. But, I think the main focus is around the way the way the military members are treated by the leaders of this free world. I'm focusing in on the opening verse. "Why do they always send the poor?", well that's obvious (however I believe it's not the poor being sent). But, my favorite line to explain the feeling of the whole song, "You depend on our protection, yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth". The soldiers offer their lives to protect America and it's inhabitants, yet the ones in charge are comfy in their own homes while the soldiers are risking life and limb for a pointless war. What is this war really about? Terrorism? Oil? Democracy?...that's the point of the message is it not? What are these soldiers fighting for really? And what are the big wigs doing to help other than making false promises and lying to the men and women who are the true heroes and leaders of this nation? I love this song, and I can't express my appreciation for our troops into words. So I'll leave a thank you here for any current or former soldiers who could be reading this. |
