It could mean practically anything. But for me, the first verse is like: someone takes certain liberties with you... it's okay cause your in a good place with that person. But then, time passes, the relationship isn't good because something about their attitude and behaviour has changed. Oh oh. "No no leave me out of it this time. I already moved on" That kind of thing. "Where did you see me go..." I think this is like looking into the future. Maybe the singer realises she is on the wrong path and that other person is part of the problem. |

Great notes everyone. Some of the images in the video remind me of the Great Depression... I stand with the Sons of Cain, burned by the fire of love. "East of Eden": Adam and Eve banished from Eden. The curse of Cain. Hmmm never thought of it that way before |

Thanks for comments about Greg Carroll and Victor Jara.I can't listen to this song without thinking of the struggle for Human Rights and Freedom from oppression in Latin America. Mothers of the Disappeared is about Argentina, Bullet the Blue Sky, El Salvador, One Tree Hill, Chile ... Painted roses and bleeding hearts - the Catholic church's complicity in hunan rights abuses |

| The Stranglers – Always The Sun Lyrics | 1 year ago |

I remember listening to this when I was about 13. At that time the sun symbolised an unidentfiable hope hanging above all the terrible things of the world and human behaviour. Now, I think the phrase is more ambiguous and ultimately must point to a nuclear holocaust as well as any positive image. "prayed for the rain" I remember the quote from Hiroshima, Mon amour: Température du soleil sur la place de la Paix The temperature of the sun on Peace Square. They built a place to celebrate peace at the place where the bomb was detonated (which reached the sun's temperature). |

The one thing I would add is that the title of the song comes from a verse in the book of Job. The oldest book of the Bible??? God asks Job: Job 38:31 Can you direct the movement of the stars— binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion? It is a book about the ancient mind trying to come to terms with suffering. It includes pictures like this of God's hand in the creation of the whole cosmos. Awe and wonderment. This ties in with the message of the song. We don't know all the answers. |

@[eddog56:48552] Hi mate Thanks for your comments years ago. Funnily enough the lyrics of this song are often unconsciously in my mind. It never occurred to me to come and check out Song Meanings. Yes, I think it is a beautiful song too. People will vary in their exact interpretation of each line & verse. The bits I like most are " What about miracles .... I am lonely and unholy". For me, this is a pointer to how people use religion and faith as vehicles for hatred and self-righteousness. If they stopped to think they would realise they were just as clueless, flawed and lonely as everyone else. "Out of the planet ... in search for a crisis to find me." I find this a sublime concept. I find it hard to paraphrase what they have written. When we are driven to look deeper and become more fervent in our faith it can be because we are trying to balance out a loss of identity or anything in another part of our lives. But noone knows the answer ultimately. And it could be a load of nonsense. TS Eliot: "this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but with a whimper." I think it is the sincerity of the questioning in many of their songs which is touching. They have suggested that hubris was part of their youthful faith. That is something I have often thought about my own faith. "Easy to be fake, blame it on my faith." |

1993 was my worst year I picked up this album 1994 or 5. This song still speaks to me powerfully about the struggle to leave depression and personal problems and build a new life. |

I think when it says I fought fate There's blood on the garden gate Seems to suggests something concrete has happened. Then: It's in his childhood IE. The cause of crazy things we do is in our childhood. A Day without Me seems to deal with suicide. Could be a suicide attempt, an act of violence. |

@[Schr4nz:7025] I like this song a lot. So I came to look at the lyrics. Yes I think I agree with people here. It was written in time of incredible space exploration. But for person singing Walking On the Moon is impossible. It is a fantasy. He can see the woman he would like to be with but she doesn't feel the same way ... |

Funnily enough I have never realised there could be a pun on arms in "into the arms of America" even though I have really liked this song for a long time. Other songs on the Joshua Tree album are about the struggle for freedom in Latin America I think: Mothers of the Disappeared and One Tree Hill which mentions Victor Jara. Archbishop Oscar Romero was murdered in El Salvador for daring to speak up for the rights of his people. Or was that Nicaragua? |

| Snow Patrol – Run Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
Thank you Nicole. The history behind how it was written is really helpful. The title of the song is Run. The first verse seems to be about running away from somewhere in fear of your life and two people not knowing if they will ever see one another because of this. But as it goes on it seems to be talking about a sense of separation of an emotional kind: "an easier way out of our little heads". It manages to be both at the same time. It could be many things: the fear of losing someone to death or in death, a relationship breakup, families broken in war. It is about running away on your own but also running to somewhere better where you will be together again. Love and hope. |
