I am dreaming of being a writer. But to be a writer, you have to be capable of understanding humanities deepest, most darkest concepts. So that explains why I'm here. To try to comprehend the subtext behind some of the oddest songs out there in musicality

Phantom Planet – California Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is not a far cry from the rap ode K-OS. They are both about crawling back to an entity that is responsible for making the artist the way they were. It's a longing and yearning for that acceptance back that seems to be unattainable either way. Plus, it's just a catchy beat to loop over and over.

Here's the one with K-OS and Saukrates: http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858786215/

Ben Folds – There's Always Someone Cooler Than You Lyrics 9 years ago
In a nutshell:

Yeah, you're the shit but you won't be it for long
But there's always someone cooler than you

Basically this song talks about the winner-less game of popularity contests, in my eyes. Fads, trends, hot topics and even celebrities go in and out of style in the public eye. And even when you have diehards of the comedy genre who still wish Gilda Radner didn't die (death shouldn't be wished upon anybody) to the society outside the experts, she isn't as cool as Kevin Hart or Amy Schumer is today… But even those guys will expire.

Otherwise, how else does the World make room for the next big thing?

I feel as if this is further referenced in "Learn To Live with What You Are."

Vampire Weekend – Hannah Hunt Lyrics 9 years ago
This song reminds me of my last relationship.

Things felt so right with this girl. We laughed, cried and spent a majority of our time together, even when it was inconvenient. She was my everything and I wanted to do everything with her. She was never very comfortable with the idea of sex, which I thought was no big deal because I was already plotting on how I was going to marry her. But consummation was never going to come because instead of locking her down, I followed foolish fantasies all the way to Los Angeles… Virtually, the world apart from Orlando, and worse still, from her.

Somedays I look back on her, less pleased than when I watched her walk away after every kiss before class. Similarly, I wonder if she ever looks back.

But like every day before class started, I know she didn't.

And that's the dead giveaway I should've realized it would be a bad idea to date her. Had I heard this song in my darker moments, I would've used that strength to break free and be my own person.

But three long years and a failed long distance relationship and she can't even take me seriously anymore.

I prefer to not hear from her. Silence gives me more realistic expectations than she ever did.

Amanda Palmer – Astronaut: A Short History of Nearly Nothing Lyrics 10 years ago
Amanda Palmer has a knack of writing thought-provoking and mood-evoking lyrics.

This song appears to me to be a dissatisfaction with her spouse.

She notes that she's not getting what she wants. Yes, he is an astronaut, committed to his work, but at the end of the day, who's his Final Frontier? Space, or Amanda?

It has a foreboding end to it, as she writes that things are going awry for him at work, and he's rapidly approaching the state of mind Amanda's been at this whole time. Maybe THEN he'll get why she is the way she is.

Maybe.
