it seems to me that he's at least referencing ray charles in this song. a poet with dark glasses on who wrote a song about a baby dying that dealt with water and fear? just sorta sticks out to me. |

i think he's using the car wreck as a metaphor for a breakup. instead of trying to forget it, all the stuff about morphine and anesthesia, he's happier being in pain and thinking about the past, when he throws himself into his injuries. |

turn a cross upside down and it sorta looks like a knife. eh? eh? that and there's a passage from the bible, i don't remember which, where it refers to the word as a sword. "introduce knife to heart" sorta has a different meaning if you think of it that way. |

so it pretty much looks like advice to somebody who's getting cold feet when they're about to get married or make the decision to get married, "mr. shiver in the river" the advice is something like, love is a myth and you're gonna end up getting used. "we might as well retire to the drawer where all used things reside". the marriage references are pretty apparent. "you were told, you were sold, i do, i do". where i do, i do is the two of them taking their vows. the gimplike references are about getting used. then at the end where he says "you might lose the one you choose, you might lose the won who won you times ten." is just about how you won't lose only who you love, you can lose pretty much everything. |

i'd bet it's about the girl from eyewtkas, how he could write another angst-filled cd that just ripped her apart and people would love it, but he's done with that because it didn't make him happy. "this is why i hang myself with jealousy upon a fence post half mast", he's still jealous and not happy about the situation. "fasion: war between the guilty and the guilty and the teen", she's guilty because she screwed him over, he's guilty because he wrote the last cd, and the teen is, well us because we ate it up.
i also thought it was interesting that there are some old country song references... "all my exes live with hexes" "i'm crying in the beer of a drunk man". all my exes live in texas and there's a tear in my beer. i dunno if it's intentional or if there's more too. |

When I read over the lyrics, Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey books came to mind... Where the guy got trapped in the star and then turned into the starchild, I thought that might be an interesting twist on the lyrics. |
