The Gaslight Anthem – Boxer Lyrics 10 years ago
This is about somebody who tried to kill themself

Obviously there are lyrics about somebody who took a lot of punishment in their life, and desperately wanted out of the situation. This person found comfort in music, and had creative outlets as a means of fighting back the trauma he or she suffered.

This person went through lovers one after another as a means of escape, claiming he just doesn't miss them and prays for a good time to try to forget about it, but ultimately can't run from it.

"There were whispers that were driving you crazy, until you hunt (or as I think it goes haunt) the heart of this town. Remember when I knew a boxer baby."

The whispers are the memories of the abuse and they are driving the person to the edge until they feel the need to take that last step, to die (haunt the heart of this town as a ghost). Remember when I knew a Boxer is the singer trying to remind the person of how much of a fighter they were against all that nonsense that has them down.

The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang Lyrics 10 years ago
To me this is a song where the singer is opening up about his life. "I seem to be coming out of my skin, these bandages just don't keep me in."

There are some people that think that this has a lot to do with his father's death (and that is definitely an element to it) but it isn't quite the whole story.

The lyrics "I got your name tattooed inside of my arm" don't refer to his dad, that sounds more like he is talking to a lover. "When it was over, I woke up alone." tell me that this is a former love.

"You told me fortunes in American Slang" Says a lot with only really using a few words. To me this says that this girl used to talk about the dreams and goals she had for herself and their life together.

When the relationship failed the singer was left without a direction, he wanted to call for his father, but is left alone to face what it because his father is now absent. It speaks to a time in all of our lives when we are going to be alone, without that guidance we once had and must carry on ourselves with only the lessons we learned in that time we had with them.

The Gaslight Anthem – 1,000 Years Lyrics 10 years ago
@[outgothelights:4644] I get the feeling too that the song is about a love of somebody who has wasted their life loving the wrong person.

The lyric "I heard about a woman once..." spoke of the feelings of somebody who wasted their lives on somebody who didn't really love them back. Somebody who did everything ever asked of her by this person and never saw anything come of it. It wasn't worth it.
