It's about fear and love, and how love is a choice more than feelings. The fear that you might not love someone forever, that your relationship will end eventually, that feelings could change. He starts off talking about how he's afraid of the relationship ending, but also afraid to admit that hes afraid. He says in the chorus that he could tell her that she's perfect, all he ever wanted, tell her everything she wants to hear, and that he will make everything fixed and perfect for her. But he says "I shudder when I think that I might not be here forever." This is his confession. He's scared when he thinks of the possibility that he might not love her forever. But there's a transformation over the course of the song, and the transformation is complete when he says right before the last chorus "all I can think is that it must be a kind of rebellion, to arm your fears like soldiers and slay them." This is when he decides that he will actively act against these fears. He will acknowledge them, and then combat them. And the last chorus is the most honest one, and most triumphant: "I can tell you that you're all I've ever wanted, dear Through the din of your breathing while you're sleeping here, You wake and you ask me if I'm gonna be here forever, forever, forever. Your face so twisted and your eyes alight, I want to tell you I can change the way you cry at night, But I'd be lying. Love is defying." When the girl asks him if he'll be there forever, he's finally honest and admits that he doesn't know, that feelings might change. He says he could lie to her and reassure her of things no one could be sure about, but he won't. That he wants to her he can make it all perfect. But he wont. He won't tell her that his feelings will never change, because it would be a lie. However, he is CHOOSING to love her. "Love is defying" - it's an act of defiance against fear, an active choice to love someone anyway despite anxiety over the future. And his choice to approach their relationship from an honest standpoint is in contrast to their parents. The first verse says "You tell me that you're scared that you're turning into your mother. I feel myself turning into my father. We could lie to each other like they do and say we're so happy. It's easy when you're young and you still want it so badly." They could take the easy route like past generations did and pretend like everything is perfect and will always be perfect, but by the end he decides that no, he will not do that. you can't let fears that your feelings will change cripple you, ruin your relationship. You have to be honest and accept that feelings might change, but that not matter what you can always choose to love anyway. It's that realization that you don't have to be afraid of the feelings and happiness fading, Bc those aren't what love is really about anyway. And your relationship is strongest when you reach this conclusion, but weak if you continue operating on the idea that love is merely a feeling. It's just so great how the music matches that message. The song starts out sounding really sad, kinda despairing. But by the end it's a symphony of triumph, a loud, big resolution to choose love, it SOUNDS like defiance. What a fantastic song |

I am also a person with mental problems, and I find this song super relatable. I feel like it's about being caught between that guilt of burdening your loved ones with your problems, not wanting to trouble them, but also needing them desperately. At least that's what I get from the lines "You'll have to watch me struggle From several rooms away But tonight I'll need you to stay" It's wanting to push them away to protect them, but also needing their presence. The rest of the song I feel depicts the descent into a breakdown. One of those danger nights where you try to stop the bad thoughts but they come anyway, and you just have to ride it out until it's over. Reminds me of a panic attack: once it starts, no one can make it stop, and you have to just wait it out. However, having simply the presence of a loved one nearby makes it so much better. And I think that sums up the whole song: sometimes people can't help us through an episode, but their simple presence nearby is reassuring and necessary, even if we feel guilty for making them stay. Also, on the topic of religious themes: I think part of what makes this song great is that the person being addressed could be anyone. God, a lover, or a friend. |

| @[gonnagetjoe:5076] I'd add that I think it's about a woman visiting a dominatrix. The line "find my heels" seems to imply that. | |

| @[Sk8oreo:4606] also I want to add that the "mountain" they're climbing might be the problems and fantasies she had when she was younger. She doesn't know if the relationship can overcome them. | |

I've loved this song since I was about 10, before I even completely knew what It meant. Now that I'm older, I relate to it a lot, and it remains one of my favorites. I believe the song is about a girl who spends her whole life hoping a boy will come along and save her. She grew up lonely, she probably has some problems ("you sit there in your heartache / waiting on some beautiful boy to / to save you from your old ways") , but she secretly thinks if she just had someone to love he would save her from herself and fix everything. When a boy finally comes, he's not exactly what she dreamed he would be (and he never would have lived up to her fantasies, because they were just that, fantasies). I think the line "he doesn't look a thing like Jesus" means he doesn't seem like a savior, and she wanted just that, a boy who would save her. "But he talks like a gentleman" means despite him not fitting her fantasies, he wins her over. Probably a smooth talking SOB honestly. She imagined a charming, perfect boy, and this one is charming. "Can we climb this mountain I don't know Higher now than ever before I know we can make it if we take it slow Let's take it easy Easy now, watch it go" I feel like these lines are describing the beginning of her relationship with the boy. She's never been this far with someone, and she's not sure what she's doing. But she still believes this boy will fulfill her fantasies, she still holds onto the idea thAt a relationship will fix her, and she thinks it will all work out if they take the relationship slowly. "We're burning down the highway Skyline On the back of a hurricane That started turning When you were young" Their relationship quickly gains speed, and it gets pretty heated. It turns into a passionate love affair. It's doomed to fail, though, because the girl is more in love with the idea of the boy than the actual boy. The failure started when she was young because that's when she began building up this unobtainable fantasy. "And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live When you were young" This is the girl looking back as an older adult, wishing she still had the innocence and flawless idea of love she possessed when she was little. "They say the devil's water It ain't so sweet You don't have to drink right now But you can dip your feet Every once in a little while" The girl is realizing that love doesn't have to be one of two extremes. It doesn't have to be a perfect, idealized dream, and it doesn't have to be a painfully raw and emotional affair. She can still experience the passion of love sometimes, but she doesn't have to completely drown in it. "I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus He doesn't look a thing like Jesus But more than you'll ever know" The girl learned from the relationship she had. No, the boy wasn't a savior in the way she imagined him to be, but maybe he was a savior in a different way. He might have taught her to save herself, or he taught her lessons about love. Overall, I think it's a bittersweet song about a woman looking back on her youth with mixed feelings. She yearns for the innocence she had as a child, back when she thought someone would sweep in and save her. But after growing up and experiencing love and relationships, she now has a more realistic view of love, even if it's one she had to gain through heartbreak and mistakes. Great song. |
