| Bright Eyes – Beginner's Mind Lyrics | 10 years ago |

i always thought this song was oberst talking to his younger self, and the starting over part is about perfecting everything and maybe, since the whole album is probably the most cheerful and hopeful of all the bright eyes albums, it's sort of about past lives and rebirth. like the beginners mind is the child that always leaves only to become a child again. starting over. the rorschach test and the psychobabble telegram and cocktail napkin epitah are all the ways that people try to find something wrong with a child, and how there's always a clear answer to everything but there never is. when he gets to the rorschach test, there's nothing to see anymore because it doesn't matter anymore. it's a terrifically sad song, probably one of his saddest songs ever, and i can't help but love it. |

@[jxnarcoticz:4330] actually, it does make sense. it's just very bizarre, but how fun because how interesting, you know? anyhow, at the time communist yugoslavia actually had a growing rock scene---punk rock, metal, you name it were all subgenres during the fifties. if his parents met in pre-war paris (1938-1939?) then his sister could have been born in 1940. "later found by a communist" is pretty vague, but by the fifties, she'd be into her teens and by the sixties, she'd be into her twenties. it does work. it's possible meloy was referencing that. he likes to be historical, so i really woundn't put that past him. history's fun. |

@[caitsith01:4328] i know you made this comment many years ago, but i like the song very much. i think it suites the lyrics. soulful ballads get repetitive, too...did you hear the hazards of love? it was awesome, they really did "rock out" on that one. i think the point of the tune for this song was that harshness of war and the kind of raw sound that comes from it is supposed to be the desperation and anger they feel. my interpretation anyway. the crane wife is an excellent album! anyone who can't look past one song if they don't like it, isn't ready to hear the decemberists yet. they're a fantastic band and the only group that can get away with saying perfect more than twenty times in one song. :) |

when i first heard this song, i didn't listen to the lyrics at all. it was two or three years ago and i was broody and in tenth grade, thinking up things that seemed important at the time. my first impression was that it was my least favorite decemberists song. but now, dudes, i totally love it. the whole song, i mean, i'm big on history so i guess i'm kind of partial to that aspect of their music. but i love most about his lyrics how one line can stay with you and you love it just the same and then discover a different meaning to it and you're thinking, oh my. but, i also, just the tune really goes well with the lyrics. he's good at that. so thinking about it, i thought maybe instead of actual eyes, he means potato eyes so the people couldn't grow anymore potatoes? it seems obvious now but i thought i'd say it anyway. |
