Portishead – Threads Lyrics 8 years ago
@[CovinS:4320] This is so true for me as well. It makes me wonder if Beth is 'one of us', an endless thinker like me. It would explain why I always feel so deeply about Portishead's music. It always speaks to me, like she's singing about what I'm feeling.

Portishead – Cowboys Lyrics 9 years ago
To me, this sounds like a song about oppressive governments. I think the 'cowboys' are talking from the point of view of the speaker.

"Did you feed us tales of deceit
Conceal the tongues who need to speak"

This part sounds like propaganda and the suppression of free speech, maybe alluding to Nazi Germany. It sounds like a big organization (a government) oppressing to an unorganized group of rebels (cowboys).

"Undefined (I think this should be 'undefied'?), no signs of regret
Your swollen pride assumes respect"

Are cowboys known for being overly prideful? I don't think so. How about political or government leaders? Definitely. Undefied, unchallenged leadership, violating people's rights with no regret.

"Ooh, if you take these things from me"

Our rights, our freedoms, our weapons. The government takes all it can from the people.

"So don't despair, this day will be their damnedest day"

The 'cowboys' rise up and damn their oppressors, they take back what has been taken from them.

I don't believe this is some anti-American song like some people here think (I certainly hope not, anyways). I think so mainly because they performed this live in New York City in 1997. It would take a real douche to perform an anti-American song to an American audience. I sure hope my favorite band wouldn't be so savagely disrespectful.
