So, this is based on information from interviews and information from Oli's life as well as my own personal experience and knowledge. And then I found out how hard it is to really change, Even hell can get comfy once you've settled in. I just wanted the numb inside me to leave. We all know that Oli struggles with addiction. Here he is talking about what leads a lot of people to using and the thoughts that almost everyone has when they first get clean. No matter how fucked you get, There's always hell when you come back down. Basically, no matter how fucked up you get, all of your problems and all the pain you're trying to escape from is still there as well as the shame and guilt and remorse from using and the life that goes along with that. The funny thing is all I ever wanted I already had There's glimpses of heaven in every day In the friends that I have, the music I made, The love that I feel, I just had to start again. Pretty obvious here. Just his realization that he just needed to start his life over with a new, fresh perspective. The days are a death wish A witch hunt for an exit I am powerless Once you get to a certain point in addiction, to the place where you are powerless over your use of drugs and alcohol, all you want is a way out. Whether that be death or an escape through other means, all you want is out. The fragile, the broken Sit in circles and stay unspoken We are powerless I've seen a lot of people say that this is about people in general. But, it isn't. This song was written about his stint in rehab. The rehab he went to was a 12-step based program. That being said, in rehab, you literally sit in circles and talk (although it's usually just awkward silence). Also, the multiple references to being powerless isn't as simple as him stating he is powerless. It's also a reference to the first step of all "Anonymous" programs (AA, NA, CA, etc.) that says "We admitted we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable". Pretty much everything after this point is in the same realm of thinking and reflection on time spent in rehab. And if you want to know how he really feels about rehab and the 12-step programs, listen to "Crooked Young". :) |
