@[wyliekyle:4131] not bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Neither of those present as two personalities. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder involving delusions, hallucinations (and in some cases, extreme paranoia), and bipolar disorder is when someone goes between two extremes (depression and mania) which are only in mood (although mania alters your perception of the world). The disorder you're looking for is DID (dissociative identity disorder, previously known as multiple personality disorder). DID occurs when someone goes through a trauma such as childhood abuse, and uses dissociation as a way to deal with it. Dissociation is a natural method that humans use to distance themselves from reality (you dissociate when you space out/lose track of time). The child creates (subconsciously) an alternate personality to deal with the abuse while they live on without remembering it. The alter protects the child, or may remain as a child in mind forever. Usually there is more than one alter, but in order for diagnosis there only needs to be one. TL;DR: bipolar disorder=mood swings (and no alternate personalities) schizophrenia= psychotic disorder involving delusions and hallucinations (no alternate personalities) Dissociative Identity Disorder= multiple personalities, stemming from child abuse, no psychotic affects, no delusions. |
