I really like this song. I see it like this: the guy in terrified by life and is suffering, disilluded and he is thinking about killing himself. And he takes the strenght to carry on living from his significant other. Their relationship is perfect, she is even "the angel of his nightmare": his life is a nightmare, but he always dreamt about someone that he actually ended up finding, the one who plays the part of an angel in a nightmare. However, she can not save him from his depression, probably because he is horrified about the world (spiders catching things and eating their insides) and the lack of meaning in life, (he counted the webs of the spiders from the beginning means he always noticed the cruelty and sadness of life). This brings him to decide to kill himself, and when the night is coming he misses her so much because he knows that if she was there he would turn happy and not think about suicide. He doesn't even know if he wants to call her, because he is in conflict whether to get help but not solve anything and keep suffering or not say anything and die. He ends up non calling her and leaving her as an "unsuspecting victim of the darkness in the valley", because she won't know anything before she finds out about the suicide. finally, maybe when he is commicting the act itself, he feels guilty because he knows that his gf loves him and that she will suffer for his death, and so he says that he doesn't deserve to be saved (waste your time on me). Still, tough, he misses her a lot because he still has the hope that she will come there to stop him and, more importantly, make him feel good with her love. she is now the voice inside his head, because he thinks only about her now, so she actually is doing something to comfort him as he is making his passing away less cruent but instead still sweet just because of his (not real) presence. This makes us understand how he loved her. then he misses her until death slowly takes the place of love. You kind of have to imagine that situation on your skin, it is a very moving story/song. It is like being tortured until you let the person you love the most suffer at your place, not because of egoism but because we are humans and cannot stand too much sufference |
